KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today complained that the prosecution team in his corruption trial was trying to confuse and trap him with repeated questions on the same issue.

The Umno president, who is on trial over the misappropriation of Yayasan Akalbudi funds, became agitated when he was bombarded with questions on alleged donations given to the charity foundation.

The 69-year old, who was being cross-examined by Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Harris Ong Mohd Jeffery Ong, shot back at the DPP when the latter kept pushing him on details about cheques from alleged donors that had been issued to the foundation.

"You are asking me the same question over and over to trap me.

"You must understand it is immoral to ask for details when someone is donating for charitable purposes," he said, only for the DPP to counter by saying that he wanted to get to the truth of the matter.

Ong said the prosecution was just trying to seek justice and he needed to get to the bottom of the truth involving charges faced by the accused.

However, Zahid - who was represented by lead counsel Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, was not satisfied with the explanation and repeated that the prosecution was going back and forth to confuse him.

High Court Judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah later chipped in and urged the DPP to continue with his questions.

Zahid was later again embroiled in a back and forth with Ong when the DPP started asking him more questions about donors who had given money to the foundation.

Ong rebuffed Zahid when the latter again started to go all over while trying to provide an explanation.

Ong: You are evading my question. Your demeanour is such that you are evading. I am giving you an opportunity to answer. We wouldn't want the court to record how your demeanour is when answering my questions.

Zahid: I am giving truthful answers. If you ask me a yes or no answer, I will reply in a likewise manner.

Zahid, who is Bagan Datuk member of parliament, was taking the stand after he was ordered to enter his defence over 47 charges involving criminal breach of trust (CBT), money laundering and corruption.

The trial continues.
