“Severe labour shortage can be solved with a stroke of a pen” By Lim Guan Eng

THERE is an urgent need for the Government to immediately resolve the acute labour shortage that has crippled production and caused businesses to reject new orders to help strengthen economic growth. A more robust growing economy will help to arrest the decline of the ringgit, which depreciated to the lowest level ever against the Singapore dollar at RM3.22 today and a 5-year low against the US dollar at RM4.46. A weak ringgit against two of our three biggest trading partners is an ominous sign of the investors’ lack of confidence in our country’s economic prospects.

The immediate impact will be imported inflation and increased costs and prices, both for businesses and consumers. Presently, there is limited fiscal space available to the Government to overcome these bleak inflation and currency numbers. Therefore, the Government should utilise its policy latitude to generate much-needed economic growth by resolving the acute labour shortage – with a stroke of a pen. “Cost manufacturers RM2 bil” The Malaysian Automotive Component Parts Manufacturers Association (MACPMA) is the latest to state that labour shortages over the last two years have cost automotive parts manufacturers RM2 bil in exports yearly. MACPMA said a few days ago that the severe labour shortage is derailing the economic recovery of the motor auto parts industry, which contributes 2% to Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP). The labour shortage has caused stoppages and led to under-production as manufacturers are not able to produce at a higher capacity. These RM2 bil losses by the motor auto parts industry come on top of the RM 31.5 bil in losses by the oil palm sector and glove industry, which could have been overcome by cutting through unnecessary red tape with a stroke of a pen. Instead, the oil palm sector and glove industry is anticipating losses of at least RM21 bil. Malaysia’s oil palm sector earlier lost an estimated RM10.5 bil worth of unpicked fruits in the first five months of this year due to the ongoing labour shortage. The total RM31.5 bil in losses from the labour shortage, estimated at 1.2 mil workers, excludes losses in the non-oil palm or glove industry, such as manufacturing, retail and hospitality, tourism and services sector, where total losses tabulated will amount to tens of billions of ringgit. “Do your job properly” Such wealth destruction could have been avoided if Cabinet Ministers had been more conscientious in carrying out their duties. Indonesian ambassador to Malaysia Hermono had announced the temporary freeze of foreign workers from Indonesia to Malaysia, condemning Malaysia as a disgrace “for breaking its promises in the memorandum of understanding (MoU)” signed by Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri M Saravanan on Indonesian maids just three months ago. Even though Saravanan had announced that all matters were resolved with Indonesia, there is no confirmation from Hermono. With such a severe trust deficit between both countries, can Saravanan tell Malaysians when will Indonesian workers be returning back to Malaysia? – July 26, 2022 Lim Guan Eng is DAP national chairman, Bagan MP and a former finance minister.

Tell me LGE, is Singapore desperate for half a million banglas like Malaysia! LGE still trap in old world! Indonesia no longer want to export their cheap labour! Indonesia will need every single cheap labour to expedite their industrlization at home!

If Malaysian continue to avoid 3Ds jobs, in the future Malaysia would not have the problem of labour shortage any more, Malaysia will possibly export labour in the future instead.

Plenty of malaysians doing 3D jobs in Australia! They are highly paid! Problem with Malaysia is that, our side continues to rely on very very cheap labour from Indonesia and Bangladesh! Which also very bad for our society as there are plenty of socio problems!

Why complain about shortage of labour? Why depend on foreign labour?
Malaysia never had shortage of labour before 1990s. When Khir Toyol started chasing away Indians from plantations and GLCs shunning employing them because of faith and skin difference, the problem began. GLCs brought in foreign workers from countries with similar faith to replace Indians.
Now they complain about shortage of workers. Why can't they work on their plantation by themselves. Call in your family members to do the job or seel of the plantation and live happily. If you still want workers, employ locals with nothing less than RM 2500 with all benefits. You can't hve the cake by yourself, share it.

You talk cock leh!
Many Malaysians are washing toilet in foreign land and what is more dirty than that?
The question is why are they not doing the same job here?
Don't give me the same standard reply of "Lazy".
It's the damn employers who are greedy and never think about their welfare.
They pay them the same salary without increment, but with deduction.
IT is no wonder Malaysia is in Tier 3, I won't be surprised if there is another level lower than that, Malaysia will occupy it. GREEDY EMPLOYER AND RACIST GLCs.

Alam! Yeah, we are been fooled by this big corporations for far too long! We don't need foreign labors! If wages are fair, i think we have more than enough local workers!
Back in the 80s, we don't even think of bringing in cheap foreign workers for our factories! Most are malaysians back then! We have so many 'pekerja kilang' back in the 80s! Then of course, you have big corporations getting more greedy and undercut those in the bottom! I mean, this big bosses have zero shame driving a few million luxury car, escape paying taxes and yet complain that local workers are too expensive!

In those day you can see many Malay ladies working in electronic assembly lines.
Nowadays all the Malay ladies in university and men become street motorbike racers or become politician machai like Jamal Yunus or become religion celebrity Preachers.

Why complain about shortage of labour? Why depend on foreign workers? Why can't you work on your own investment. If out of hand, call in your family members to help with your plantation or whatever earns you money. We never had this problem before 1990s. Khir Toyol devastated many estates to dive out many Indians without any compensation. They were abandoned with their livelihood ripped off when GLCs took over plantation. They did not want to rehire them due to faith and skin differences, thus many foreign workers of same faith were imported to fill the labour gap. Now they cry high and low for workers when you have it locally. Just pay them a decent pay with all benefits and the problem will be solved. But FAITH will stand in their way!
