SUBANG JAYA: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has suggested that teaching and learning methods be updated along with the development of technology to ensure that more students in this country have the opportunity to gain knowledge from the best teachers.

Speaking at the Sultan Abdul Hamid College Golden Jubilee Celebration Ceremony, here on Saturday (Aug 17), Dr Mahathir said by using technology, the best teachers in Malaysia can contribute towards improving education by making video recordings as a teaching technique for reference by students across the country.

"I think it's time for us to change the way we teach... if before we only had classroom teachers who taught students. Sometimes we get good teachers to teach and we get excellent results.

"But sometimes we are less fortunate...but now because we can make video recordings, we can get the best teachers to make the recordings.

"The recording can then be used all over the country, even in every school you can get lessons from the best teachers in Malaysia," he said, here.

Dr. Mahathir, who is also the Lifetime President of the KL Sultan Abdul Hamid College Ex-Students' Association (Sahoca), said he hoped the government would be able to make full use of technology.

In a separate development, Dr. Mahathir, who entered the college in 1932, hoped that the college would be recognised as the best educational institution in Malaysia.

At the ceremony, the Sultan of Kedah, Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah, presented the Sahoca Kuala Lumpur (KL) Anugerah Semangat Padi award to Dr. Mahathir.

The award recognises Sahoca\ members or former students of the college who have successfully held the highest positions in the Malaysian public service.

Sultan Sallehuddin also launched Sahoca KL's 50th Aspiration Award which is an initiative to reward the best students who receive the college's annual gold medal.

The award will be given every year starting this year for the next 50 years.

Also present at the ceremony were Dr. Mahathir's wife, Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, Kedah state executive councillor Dr.Haim Hilman Abdullah and Sahoca KL President, Datuk Zulkhairi Md Zain.

Zulkhairi said he hopes that Sahoca KL will continue to be a bridge to strengthen friendships between members and help students who are studying at the college.
