Total funds raised via equity crowdfunding dropped 36.4% to RM140.38 mil in 2022, says SC

KUALA LUMPUR (March 27): Total funds raised via equity crowdfunding (ECF) fell 36.40% to RM140.38 million in 2022, from RM220.72 million in 2021, according to the Securities Commission Malaysia’s (SC) 2022 Annual Report released on Monday (March 27).

Similarly, the number of total successful campaigns decreased to 67 in 2022 from 104 in 2021.

Nevertheless, campaign sizes in 2022 continued to be of larger fundraising amounts, with 89% of campaigns raising above the RM500,000 mark. In particular, there was an increase in larger campaigns size, with 21% of campaigns raising above RM3 million on ECF platforms, compared to 17% in 2021.

The highest amount of funds raised in 2022 by a single fundraising campaign stood at RM17 million.

In terms of the sectors served, the professional, scientific and technical activities continued to receive the most funds in 2022, with total funds raised amounting to RM41.37 million in 2022.

In particular, the agriculture, forestry and fishing sector grew exponentially to RM19.32 million in 2022 from RM753,750 in 2021.

Meanwhile, the number of campaigns for Series A grew from 54% in 2021 to 72% in 2022, with majority of the campaigns were fundraising for purposes of business expansion.

As at the end of 2022, total issuers stood at 305. Nevertheless, the total number of issuers decreased to 65 in 2022 from 104 in 2021, with the majority of issuers having been in operation for less than three years.

Since inception, total funds raised via ECF stood at RM560.34 million via 330 campaigns. Shariah-compliant campaigns contributed to 3% of the total funds raised.

The total number of participating investors surpassed the 14,000-mark since ECF was first introduced.
