KUALA LUMPUR: Kota Raja Umno division chief Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz says he is ready to become Selangor Menteri Besar if the top leadership of Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) wants it.

Tengku Zafrul, who is an Umno Supreme Council member, said he would leave the decision to the top leadership.

"The suggestion was merely the personal opinion of Khairy Jamaluddin.

"I leave it to the top leadership to decide on the matter and I will abide by it," he told reporters during his visit to the media centre set up in conjunction with the 2023 Umno General Assembly.

Khairy, in a recent episode of the "Keluar Sekejap" podcast featuring him and former Umno information chief Shahril Sufian Hamdan, suggested that Tengku Zafrul become the next Selangor Menteri Besar if the BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition wins in the state.

The former health minister also suggested that the unity government leadership make a direct exchange between the positions of Tengku Zafrul, who is investment, trade and industry minister, and current Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

Tengku Zafrul has remained coy over the possibility of him contesting the Sungai Kandis seat in the upcoming state elections.

"I am not sure if I will contest or not. It is up to the top leadership.

"Whatever the decision is, as a party man I will abide by it," he said.
