MELAKA: Assemblymen, the Speaker and top state officials will all get a salary hike from January.

The Chief Minister’s salary will be raised from RM15,000 to RM18,000 while the fixed allowance for assemblymen will be hiked from RM9,000 to RM12,000.

The state executive council members will get an additional RM8,000, instead of RM7,000.

The Speaker appointed from among assemblymen will get RM11,000 instead of the RM7,000 now while the Speaker appointed from outside the assembly will get RM11,000, up from RM8,000.

Both speakers will also receive the members of the assembly allowance of RM12,000, compared to the current RM9,000.

The state secretary, legal adviser and financial officer positions are also entitled to a hike from RM8,250 to RM9,250.

The State Assembly approved the Bill yesterday to amend Members of the Administration and Members of the Legislative Assembly (Remuneration) (Amendment) Enactment.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the remuneration was last reviewed in 2015, adding that the state’s assemblymen received among the lowest remuneration in the country, ranked 11th of the 13 states.

He said 10 states had increased remuneration for assemblymen.

The Melaka state executive council agreed on Nov 1 to approve the new salaries when tabling the motion during the proceedings on Nov 11 at Seri Negeri in Ayer Keroh.

Ab Rauf also presented an amendment to Section 4A to raise the remuneration provided to the Deputy Speaker position from RM3,000 to RM4,000.

“I am also pleased to announce that this salary hike will also be enjoyed by 123 retired state assemblymen, whether they are receiving pensions or supplementary pensions,” he said.
