KUALA LUMPUR: A Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) leader has denied claims made by its Supreme Leadership Council member Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof that 10 members of parliament (MP) from the government bloc are set to switch their support for Perikatan Nasional (PN), subsequently forming a new government.

Bersatu Youth (Armada) chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal asserted that what was voiced by Redzuan was merely baseless speculation.

"This is news from a senior Bersatu leader who is not an MP. Who knows where the claims came from? The claims are baseless.

"Why? Because five Bersatu MPs have pledged their support for (Datuk Seri) Anwar Ibrahim. How can we form a government or seek support from Umno MPs," he said when contacted.

Wan Fayhsal was commenting on Redzuan's claims, as reported by several news portals today that more than 10 MPs from the government bloc are poised to switch their support to PN to form a new government, including representatives from PKR.

Commenting further, Wan Fayhsal said that Bersatu MPs are committed to continuing their role as the opposition, besides acknowledging Anwar's having obtained two-thirds support in the Dewan Rakyat.

"He (Redzuan) is not an MP and that was his response to what happened to Bersatu MPs (recently).

"Right now, Anwar has a two-thirds majority. How is it possible for MPs from the government bloc to switch sides and so on," he said.

After five Bersatu MPs declared their support for Anwar, the prime minister now has support from 152 MPs, exceeding the two-thirds majority threshold of 148 MPs.

Meanwhile, Redzuan, when contacted, refused to comment further on the issue.

"No further comments," he said briefly.

Earlier, Redzuan reportedly said that the claims were not just empty talks.

He claimed that internal discussions were ongoing among the party's top leadership.
