BERSATU supreme council member Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof insists that he heard that more than 10 backbenchers are set to voice support for Perikatan Nasional (PN) soon adding that it is useless to speculate on how many Bersatu MPs will support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s government.

Redzuan said “internal negotiations” are currently ongoing among the coalition’s leadership on the matter. He did not give the names of the MPs.

He claimed that the 10 MPs comprise lawmakers from various parties, including Anwar’s PKR, who would make the “first batch” to cross over due to disappointment over the coalition government being “led by DAP”.

“Rather than speculating about more Bersatu MPs supporting the government, I think talks of government-bloc MPs, including from Barisan Nasional (BN) and PKR, supporting PN to form a new government, are more realistic.

“I heard about more than 10 MPs wanting to switch blocs. They are studying issues plaguing the government today and realise that it is led by DAP,” Sinar Harian quoted the former entrepreneur development and cooperative minister as saying.

Meanwhile, the Bukit Gantang MP Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal seems to confirm that there are ongoing ‘negotiations’ for BN-PH MPs to jump ship to PN.

In an interview that appeared on the X platform, he gave the reason why PN refused to negotiate for MP allowances. He pointed out that leaders of the PN told him and other MPs to be patient as they were certain Anwar’s government would fall.

However, he added that they waited months and nothing happened in the attempts by the PN to overthrow the PH-BN government. No MPs from the government defected to the opposition.

Instead, five Bersatu MPs have left the party and are now in support of Anwar.

The other four Bersatu MPs had pledged support for Anwar’s leadership are Kuala Kangsar MP Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid,  Labuan MP Suhaili Abdul Rahman, Gua Musang MP Mohd Azizi Abu Naim and Jeli MP Zahari Kechik.

With support from five Bersatu MPs, Anwar should now have 152 parliamentarians on his side. This cannot be proven until bloc voting takes place in the Dewan Rakyat. - Dec 2, 2023
