LABUAN: Commuters to and from Labuan will continue to enjoy subsidised ferry and boat fares next year, says Labuan Corporation (LC).
It said the Federal Government was committed to providing an annual RM7mil subsidy for sea travellers commuting between Labuan and Sabah, Sarawak, and vice versa in 2024.
LC said this subsidy, in place since 2014, was dedicated to alleviating the financial burden of Malaysian citizens travelling by sea to and from the island.
The allocation was to subsidise 50% of the ferry and speed boat passenger fares, it said in a statement yesterday, according to a report by Bernama.
The subsidised routes encompass Labuan-Menumbok-Labuan, Labuan-Kota Kinabalu-Labuan, Labuan-Sipitang-Labuan, Labuan-Limbang-Labuan, and Labuan-Lawas-Labuan.LC chief executive officer Rithuan Ismail said the sea travel subsidy not only eased the financial strain on commuters in Sabah but would also benefit those from Sarawak making similar journeys.
