JOHOR BARU: Malaysians should work towards getting closer and understanding each other better instead of dwelling on controversies, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic).

The MCA president said it is time to move on from the socks episode and learn from the incident.

“His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has issued a decree, and the Prime Minister has also given his views and advice.

“We live in a diverse community, we must take religious and racial sensitivity very seriously,” he told a press conference after chairing a Johor MCA meeting here yesterday.

At the same event, Dr Wee said with more people falling prey to online scams, especially the past few weeks, the government and banks should play a more proactive role.

“Our party’s public complaints bureaus noticed there were many cases where the victims were able to make more than 10 transactions in one day.

“How could this have happened when there is a limit on the number of transactions allowed to be made within a day?

“Whether it is due to carelessness or a weakness in the system, the government must take proactive measures to hold banks accountable for such cases,” he added.

Separately, in a Facebook post, Dr Wee said issues such as national debt, financial incentives for sugar manufacturers and problems facing several newly constructed and relocated Chinese primary schools were also discussed in the meeting.

“Another issue that concerns small and medium-sized poultry farmers is the compulsory conversion of an open cage system to a closed coop system, which will cost an additional RM7mil to RM10mil, which 70% of the farmers cannot afford.

“This problem will eventually lead to a shortage of chickens and eggs.

“We also talked about appointing leaders to chair the state tourism bureaus of MCA which will help promote the country’s tourism industry and the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme,” he added.
