KHAIRY Jamaluddin has urged UMNO Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh to stop hitting out at convenience store chain KK Mart over the “Allah” socks controversy, saying the latter has already gotten his point across.

This is after the Merlimau assemblyman had continued to publicly campaign for a nationwide boycott of KK Mart despite the chain having already issued an apology last week.

“Yes, we understand that as the UMNO Youth chief, you are supposed to be the ‘hero of Malaya’. But you have (already) gotten your point across,” Khairy, who is a former UMNO Youth chief, stated in the latest episode of his Keluar Sekejap podcast.

“Now it’s time to step back and let the authorities deliver justice as this (continued criticism of KK Mart) could affect relations between the (various) ethnicities and between Muslims and non-Muslims.”

Recall that last week, Akmal had insisted that he had no intention of being a “hero” but was merely doing his part as a Muslim, saying that any Muslim, regardless of their faith and conviction, would react similarly if someone had insulted their religion.

Akmal was responding to lawyer and activist Siti Kasim who had previously accused him of trying to be a hero in the “Allah” socks controversy.

On March 22, he had also advised the owners of the KK Mart convenience chain to “find another business,” suggesting the convenience chain will go under from his call to boycott it over the “Allah” socks row.

Akmal further noted that the boycott will serve as a lesson to those who did not take care over the so-called “3R” issues of royalty, religion, and race.

“This boycott is not just for KK Mart, I want to tell you this boycott is for a lesson to any party that tries to play this very sensitive issue which is the 3R,” he was quoted as saying at the sideline of UMNO’s breaking of fast event.

“You don’t do wrong things and apologise, do something wrong and apologise. So with this boycott effort, we hope that after this there will be no more incidents and of course this will continue until we truly feel cured.”

Earlier today (March 26) KK Mart Group founder and executive chairman Datuk Seri Dr Chai Kee Kan and his wife Loh Siew Mui in her capacity as company director claimed trial to a charge of deliberately hurting religious feelings at the Shah Alam Sessions Court this morning.

Chai, better known as KK Chai, and Loh were charged before judge Muhamad Anas Mahadzir under Section 298 of the Penal Code which stipulates offences related to deliberately hurting the religious feelings of others and carries a punishment of up to one year in jail, a fine, or both.

Three other individuals, who are the directors of Xin Jiang Chang Sdn Bhd were also slapped with criminal charges in relation to the case. - March 26, 2024
