KUCHING: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has announced the proposal for a new port at Tanjung Embang to alleviate congestion issues at Senari Port, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

Speaking at the Hari Raya Open House event in Gedong District on Sunday, Abang Johari outlined the strategic development planned to ease the heavy reliance on the smaller Senari Port, with the proposed new port to be modelled after maritime infrastructures in Japan.

"As we all know, Senari Port is small, so we will create a new port in Tanjung Embang," he said.

Unlike traditional port constructions, the proposed Tanjung Embang port will be built at sea, employing land reclamation techniques to avoid the ecological and geographical challenges of coastal dredging.

"We don't have to dredge the beach because the depth at sea is sufficient to build the port," he added.

The construction of the port at sea aims to mitigate environmental impact while addressing logistical bottlenecks. Once completed, the port will be connected to the mainland, enhancing transport links to Kota Samarahan and Gedong.

Echoing the successes of similar projects in Japan and China, the Sarawak Premier expressed confidence in adopting these international models.

"If advanced countries like Japan and China can do it, it is not impossible to use the same method to build a seaport on Sarawak's coastline," he said.
