KUCHING: The Sarawak Utilities and Telecommunications Ministry has identified 10 river basins across the state that can be used for hydropower development, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

This initiative aligns with Sarawak's goal to enhance its renewable energy capacity.

Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said that these basins would be developed using advanced technologies to harness cascading hydropower.

"Utilising the natural flow of river currents, we aim to implement cutting-edge solutions to optimise our renewable energy sources," he said during his Aidilfitri Open House event.

According to Julaihi, three of these river basins have already been proposed to the state government for development.

"Our approach will not only focus on technological advancement but also on community involvement.

"We plan to engage local residents actively in the project, which will be coordinated by Sarawak Energy Berhad with oversight from local district offices and grassroots leaders," he added.

This development is part of Sarawak's broader strategy, as envisioned by Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg, to produce 10 gigawatts of energy by 2030, bolstering the state's position as a leader in sustainable energy production in the region.
