KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) has urged the government to act quickly to implement the 'Skim Kemalangan Bukan Bencana Kerja' (SKBBK), or non-occupational accident scheme.

MTUC president Mohd Effendy Abdul Ghani said the government needed to protect the rights of workers.

"A comprehensive protection outside of working hours like this needs to be introduced in line with the government's commitment to empowering the welfare of the people."

Effendy said the new social security scheme should have a wider scope where it could provide compensation for medical treatment, income replacement and financial support.

The total of 1,631 road accidents recorded during the recent Op Selamat was a cause for concern.

Highlighting the significance of SKBBK in Malaysia's pursuit of becoming a developed nation, Effendy said there was a need to improve employee benefits.

MTUC's call for the introduction of SKBBK underscores the collective effort to foster a safer environment for workers.
