KANGAR: The questioning of Perlis Mentri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) should not be made into a big issue and the state government is functioning as usual, says a state exco member.

“The Mentri Besar was only in the MACC office for questioning and to assist in investigations. All state matters are unaffected,” said state information committee chairman Muhammad Azmir Azizan.

The Santan assemblyman, who asked everyone to stay calm on the matter, was confident that Mohd Shukri would fully cooperate with the anti-graft body.Mohd Shukri, 68, rose to become the Mentri Besar after Perikatan Nasional swept all state constituencies during the six-state election in August last year.

The soft-spoken leader was a schoolteacher from 1985 before entering politics in 2013, contesting the Sanglang state seat in the 13th General Election.

He defended it in 2018 and again in GE15, fending off three challengers from Barisan Nasional, Pakatan Harapan and Parti Warisan with a majority of 3,355 votes.

In 2019, Mohd Shukri, who is also state PAS commissioner, created a stir when he suffered a heart attack during a ceramah in Kangar.

He collapsed and was rushed to Hospital Tuanku Fauziah in Kangar before being transferred to Alor Setar.

PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, PAS spiritual leader Datuk Hashim Jasin, Perlis Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim and more than 2,000 supporters from the two parties were at the ceramah.
