KUALA LUMPUR: Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh has retired from his post beginning yesterday (May 9) after leading the body for four years.

In a statement, The Election Commission (EC) extended its highest appreciation to Abdul Ghani who had held the position for four years since August 2020.

Previously, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali announced that the former EC secretary would hold the chairmanship until he reached the age of 66.

Besides serving in the EC, Abdul Ghani had previously held several positions including as Kuala Langat district officer, Corporate Planning and Community Development Department director, Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) member and as Gombak district officer.

Yesterday (May 9), Abdul Ghani reportedly said that the Kuala Kubu Baharu State Legislative Assembly (DUN) by-election was his last assignment as chairman.

He had announced previously that his retirement will begin on May 9, after serving the commission for several years.

He said that during his tenure, the elections during the Covid-19 pandemic were the most memorable experience for him.

"The Covid-19 era elections were the most enjoyable and memorable. I cannot forget the case in Melaka, where a managing officer was infected with Covid-19. However, the officer had to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when submitting nomination forms," he said.
