THE Parliamentary Special Select Committee (PSSC) on Human Rights, Elections and Institutional Reform chairman William Leong Jee Keen said the committee has agreed that the process of appointing a new EC chairman should be carried out openly and through consultation with Parliament.

William, who is also the Selayang MP, said the special committee is ready to convene to review and filter the candidates that will be considered to fill the position.

“Jabatan Kejuruteraan Petrokimia (JKPK) will then submit views and recommendations to the government and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar to support His Majesty and the Council of Rulers in exercising discretion under Article 114 of the Federal Constitution.

“The effort to involve Parliament (through the JKPK) in the appointment process is a sign of goodwill to civil society partners and recognition of their concerns while showing that this unity government is committed to delivering real, immediate and impactful reforms, in addition to long-term structural reforms,” the statement read.

This move aims to enhance civil society’s involvement and demonstrate the government’s commitment to impactful reforms.

The previous chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh retired on May 9.

The appointment process will be conducted transparently, addressing calls from Bersih and other organisations for greater accountability in electoral management. - May 18, 2024
