PETALING JAYA: A grievance mechanism is among the important considerations to be included in the proposed Gig Workers Commission, says the Human Resources Ministry.

It said an interim report on the Gig Workers Commission will be presented to the Cabinet in June.

The report will cover the necessary legislation in the form of a new Act; the grievance mechanism; the structure and function of the Commission; financial implications; wage determination; social security and health protection; and integrating the data of workers and registered platform providers.

“The ministry has taken immediate action following the government’s decision to establish the Gig Workers Commission.

“A team of consultants from Universiti Malaya was appointed in April and the Minister (Steven Sim) chaired a meeting on May 14,” the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday (May 21).

It added that setting up the commission will bring about a formal channel to handle issues faced by gig workers including grievances related to platform providers' manipulation and wage rate determination, among others.

The ministry said the final report will be tabled in August.

On March 2, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the formation of the commission to protect and safeguard the welfare of gig workers in the country.
