JOHOR BARU: The Transport Ministry is expected to complete its study on Johor’s proposal to establish an elevated Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system by August, says its state executive councillor Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh.

The Johor works, transportation, infrastructure and communication committee chairman said the establishment of the elevated ART was among plans the Johor government has put forward to reduce congestion here, especially after the Johor Baru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS Link) begins operating in 2027.

“The Transport Ministry has asked to be given until August to complete its study before making any decision on the matter.

“We hope that the Ministry will be able to complete its proposal earlier than that. The state government had already carried out its own study before putting the idea forward and we hope that they would also take this into consideration,” he said.

He said this in a press conference after chairing a meeting about high-impact projects in Johor here in Forest City on Tuesday (May 28).

Fazli said the state government hopes that the elevated ART could be completed before the operation of the RTS link.

“We hope that the project can be finalised soon and completed before 2027, when the RTS-Link is expected to begin operating.

“This is important so that we can reduce congestion in Johor, especially Johor Baru, which is expected to worsen upon the completion of the RTS-Link,” he added.

He said there are currently a total of 187 choking points in Johor where 69 are located in the Johor Baru area.
