KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 1,691 individuals have been detained in connection with prostitution activities following 409 raids this year, says Comm Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa.

The Kuala Lumpur police chief said the police have always conducted continuous operations against prostitution dens on the city.

"Such vice activities are illegal and not welcomed at all.

"We will conduct continuous operations on prostitution dens to prevent it from being prevalent in Kuala Lumpur," he told a press conference at Brickfields district police headquarters on Thursday (June 27).

While it was not easy to curb the oldest profession in the world, Comm Rusdi said the police will not relent in their efforts.

"Among hotspots on our radar are Jalan Petaling, Jalan Geylang, Jalan Richmore and Jalan Pudu.

"We detained 1,691 individuals this year, mostly foreigners from Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and Uganda between January and June.

"The suspects were detained in Dang Wangi (515), Brickfields (512), Cheras and Wangsa Maju (225 each) and Sentul (214).

"We have detected prostitution activities in every district in Kuala Lumpur except Putrajaya.

"We will use the full legal means to combat prostitution.

"Such cases are often investigated under Section 372 of the Penal Code, which encompasses action against the pimps and prostitutes.

"We always aim to successfully prosecute those detained," he said.
