PUTATAN: The Housing and Local Government Ministry has allocated RM63.3mil for all 26 local authorities in Sabah this year, says Nga Kor Ming.

The Housing and Local Government Minister said the funding is intended for small-scale projects across local government areas, focusing on infrastructure, public facilities, socio-economic enhancements, and security improvements to benefit residents.

Nga stated that this allocation aligns with the ministry’s commitment to enhancing socio-economic conditions and quality of life, as well as improving local authority services, particularly in Sabah.

"Under Budget 2024, a total of RM14.1mil has also been earmarked for upgrading drainage systems, public markets, and maintaining reservoirs throughout Sabah," Nga said at the Tamu Putatan Project handover ceremony on Thursday (July 25).

Also present were Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, who is also state Housing and Local Government Minister, and Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, who is also Sabah Works Minister.

The RM10mil Tamu Putatan project site, which includes 239 stalls for traders, was handed over to Putatan District Council chairman Masawi Salleh by Local Government Department director-general Datuk Mohd Fadzli Mohd Kenali.

Nga added that the ministry is focusing on upgrading public toilets, renovating old public markets, and establishing new Madani stalls and business kiosks this year.

He highlighted that this initiative reflects the Madani government’s four key commitments to developing Sabah through allocations across various agencies and departments under his ministry.

"In addition to development allocations, the ministry also provides annual operational grants to the 26 local authorities to support their management.

"This includes contributions for assessment rates on federal government properties within local authority areas and assistance with electricity bills for streetlights and traffic lights," Nga added.

He noted that RM85.32mil was allocated to Sabah for operational assistance last year. – Bernama
