THE case of a six-year-old child who went missing at the Bon Odori festival in Johor Bahru a few days back had gripped the nation.

However, thanks to prompt action by the police force, Albertine Leo was found located in a hotel in Batang Kali, Selangor.  Five suspects have since been arrested and remanded for police investigation for the crimes of abduction and physical sexual assault on a child.

Given the high profile of the case, many Malaysians were relieved at the child’s rescue and social media has been awash with messages congratulating the cops for their efficient and effective action.

There were thousands of messages expressing gratitude to the cops for the speedy resolution.

However, a few also brought up numerous other cases that are currently unsolved. These include the high-profile cases involving the missing pastor Raymond Koh and NGO volunteer Amri Che Mat as well as the children of Indira Gandhi.

The former case involves of allegations of conversion of Muslims to Christianity. SUHAKAM has since found that their disappearance had hallmarks of police or special branch involvement. Amri went missing in 2016 and Koh was abducted a year later.

The latter case involves children being unilaterally converted to Islam by the husband who then abducted three of the children. Despite court rulings declaring the conversion as unconstitutional and ordering the cops to locate the abducted children and return them to their mother, there has been little or next to no progress since the children were kidnapped in 2009.

The speed in which Leo was located showed that PDRM had the capability and necessary nous to solve such cases, leading some netizens to suggest something was not right with the delay in Indira’s case.

Credit where credit is due but pertinent questions need to be asked regarding the unresolved cases. The above examples are heavy with 3R (race, religion and royalty) baggage but these make them even more pertinent given the public interest surrounding them.

FocusM believes that given the recent success and attention on the Albertine Leo case, it is a good time to revisit the above-mentioned cases.

These cases need to be resolved not just for the families involved but also the public at large. Leaving them unresolved will only serve to undermine the PDRM who will be accused of being politically-motivated in their actions. - July 28, 2024
