MCA president Wee Ka Siong continues to make unprovoked attacks against the unity government, especially DAP leaders.

The latest is his unwarranted and baseless allegations in his Facebook post against Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying for criticising him for terminating the iconic heritage ferry service when he was the transport minister from 2020-22.

Hui Ying was not an MP when Wee was the transport minister and it was me, not her, who had condemned Wee for betraying Penangites by ending the iconic 146-year old ferry service which once conveyed cars, motorcycles and people.

It is true that DAP and I had campaigned in the last general elections to restore the iconic ferry service and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had even agreed to do so when I first met him in his early days as Prime Minister.

However, both of us were shocked that it was not a simple matter of spending RM30 mil to RM40 mil to put back the three-four iconic ferries back to service. This is due to the ferry terminal for the iconic heritage ferries being altered or destroyed when Wee was the transport minister.

Heart and soul in opposition

To rebuild and repair the ferry terminal to allow the iconic ferries to operate would require more than RM80 mil alone.

The Federal government cannot find any financially feasible or viable justification to spend more than RM20 mil to restore three-four iconic ferries to operate because the cost of repairing and restoring the ferry terminal is too exorbitant.

Instead of owning up and taking responsibility for destroying the terminal for the iconic heritage ferries, Wee has chosen to launch a baseless and unprincipled attack against me.

I had not wanted to raise Wee’s culpability here because we are all part of the unity government.

Unfortunately, I have no choice but to do so when only Wee’s body is in the government but his heart is with the opposition with his serial attacks against government leaders.

With Wee’s unprovoked attacks, I have no choice but to disclose that the destruction of the ferry terminal for the iconic ferries during Wee’s tenure as transport minister is the primary cause why the iconic heritage ferry service cannot be restored.

Destroying the terminal for the iconic heritage ferry is the death knell for Penang’s 146-year-old ferries that can convey cars.

Will Wee either apologise to 1.8 million Penangites or explain why it was so necessary to terminate the iconic heritage ferry service so comprehensively by destroying its terminal? - July 28, 2024

Former finance minister Lim Guan Eng is DAP chairman, Bagan MP and Air Putih state assemblyman. He was also Penang’s chief minister from 2008 to 2018.
