KUALA LUMPUR: The Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on Governance, Integrity, and Anti-Corruption has proposed three key recommendations today to strengthen governance, integrity, and anti-corruption efforts aimed at cultivating a society with high ethics and integrity.

Committee chairman Senator Datuk Dr. Arman Azha Abu Hanifah said that the committee recommends the establishment of a special joint parliamentary committee comprising members of both the Dewan Negara and Dewan Rakyat, to specifically oversee the selection and screening process for key positions such as the Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the Chief Ombudsman.

"In addition, the committee proposes making the Malaysian Ombudsman an independent institution that reports directly to Parliament, with Ombudsman reports to be presented in both the Dewan Negara and Dewan Rakyat.

"Furthermore, there should be a focus on prosecuting bribe-givers, as they initiate the crime of corruption, given that most arrests and charges currently focus only on bribe recipients," he said during a press conference at the Parliamentary Media Centre on Thursday (Aug 1).

These recommendations were made based on proceedings conducted by the committee over six months, during which they consulted numerous parties, including the MACC, the Public Complaints Bureau, and the Legal Affairs Division to gather detailed information. - Bernama
