PAS lawmaker Muhammad Ismi Mat Taib pointed out the remarkable ability of sports to transcend racial and religious boundaries in Malaysia. This comes in light of the recent success of the Malaysian badminton doubles pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, who secured a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, marking the nation’s first medal in the competition.

The Parit MP lauded their achievement as not only a testament to Malaysia’s competitiveness on the international stage but also an inspiration for the younger generation.

“Their achievement not only shows Malaysia is capable of competing at the international level but also tells us that with hard work and support, we can achieve anything,” he stated.

Moreover, Ismi highlighted the unwavering support Malaysians have shown for the pair, pointing out that sports are a powerful tool for fostering unity across diverse backgrounds.

From the onset, Malaysians showered the nation’s athletes with undivided support.

“The Jalur Gemilang was proudly displayed in various corners, be it in Malaysia or abroad, underscoring our immense hope and prayers for their success,” HarakahDaily quoted him as saying.

He also pointed out the overwhelming presence of supportive messages on social media, with hashtags like #TeamMalaysia, #MalaysiaBoleh, and #DemiMalaysia trending as Malaysians united to back their national heroes.

“I was informed that apart from moral support, numerous other initiatives were undertaken by various quarters to support Malaysian athletes.

“From the federal government, state governments and corporate firms, all joined hands to provide contributions for our athletes’ well-being and ensure they had the best preparation.

“The funding, sponsorship of training camps and provision of international standard facilities were among the efforts that show how serious we are in supporting their struggle,” he added.

According to Ismi, this period demonstrated how the national spirit can overcome differences and unite Malaysians toward a common goal: supporting their athletes.

“Hopefully, this spirit of unity remains fertile and serves as the foundation for our success during future challenges,” he further added.

In addition to Chia and Soh’s success, Malaysia’s top badminton singles player Lee Zii Jia also brought home a bronze medal after defeating India’s Lakshya Sen, further exemplifying Malaysia’s prowess in the sport and reinforcing the unifying power of athletic achievement. – Aug 7, 2024
