JOHOR BARU: Independent senator C. Sivaraj wants to rejoin MIC, claims party president Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran.

The MIC president said the matter would be brought to the central working committee (CWC) meeting.

"It shouldn't be a problem," he said, adding that former party members only need to submit a written request to him expressing intent to rejoin the party.

On Aug 2, Vigneswaran said MIC was willing to accept former members who wish to rejoin.

On the upcoming Mahkota by-election, Vigneswaran said he hoped Barisan Nasional would field a young candidate.

"I hope that the Barisan candidate is young and vibrant, one who is ready to serve and give back to the people," he said during a press conference after attending the 78th Johor MIC convention at a hotel here on Sunday (Aug 18).

He added that MIC would fully support the Barisan candidate.

The Mahkota seat fell vacant after the death of its assemblyman Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain of Umno on Aug 2.

During the Johor election in 2022, she won the Mahkota seat against Amanah's Taqiuddin Cheman, Bersatu's Mohamad Nor and Warisan's Mohamed Noor Suleiman.

Nomination day for the by-election has been set for Sept 14, early voting on Sept 24 and polling is on Sept 28.
