IF you grew up in Malaysia, chances are that you have been “introduced” to the unassuming but deadly rotan (cane) at a very young age.

In fact, a rotan is a common sight in many Malaysian households and many parents would be quick to point out that this is certainly the most “effective” way to discipline a mischievous and wayward child.

This is why a recent video taken by a Malaysian family at the Prison Museum in Melaka where they were given a demonstration of how prisoners get punished by the rotan had gone viral, prompting a trip down memory lane for many.

In the video posted by hiviralofficial on its Instagram page, a prison warden in charge of the presentation was seen sharing the caning procedure, including the posture offenders had to take during canings.

“This is what happens to children who like to play with their phones and those who like to talk back to their fathers and do not listen to their mothers. Are there such people here?” intoned the prison warden to a crowd made up of parents and their young children.

Several parents were then seen gleefully “outing” their children, prompting a collective round of wails and tears from the kiddos, much to the amusement of netizens.

In the comments section, many netizens applauded such presentations and wondered where if there were such events at their respective states so that they can bring their children.

In fact, some even asked if it was possible for schools to organise such programmes to “motivate” children to stay on the right path.

However, not all netizens agree with such a method, with some warning about the negative repercussions to such punishments at a young age.

What do you think? Should such demonstrations and programmes be organised by the school? - Aug 26, 2024
