PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister and Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will be charged in court on Tuesday (Aug 27) under the Sedition Act for comments made during the recent Nenggiri by-election.

The Bersatu president will be charged at the Gua Musang Sessions Court on Tuesday morning over alleged seditious remarks concerning the process of the appointment of the prime minister.

This was announced by Bersatu Information committee member Badrul Hisham Shaharin in a Facebook post Monday (Aug 26).

“Muhyiddin will be charged at the Gua Musang Sessions Court tomorrow (Aug 27) under the Sedition Act.

“The prosecution using the Sedition Act is a political act and Muhyiddin was being charged for speaking the truth,” said Badrul Hisham in his statement.

Muhyiddin was investigated by the police after reports were made over a viral video during the Nenggiri campaign period,

In the video, Muhyiddin, speaking at a ceramah at Felda Perasu on Aug 15, seemingly questioned the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decision to appoint Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the prime minister after the 15th general election.

The video has since drawn severe condemnation from various parties, including the Tengku Mahkota Pahang Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

At least 29 police reports were lodged against Muhyiddin, who gave his statement to the police on Tuesday (Aug 20), along with 115 statutory declarations submitted to Istana Negara on Nov 21, 2022.

Muhyiddin has since defended his controversial remarks, saying it was just a statement of facts and he had no intention of insulting the royal institution of Malay Rulers.

He stated that his campaign speech was focused on factual events related to the formation of the government after the 15th General Election and the subsequent challenges faced by the public due to government policies.
