KUALA LUMPUR: It is untrue that all construction projects in the city have been suspended, says Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif.

She said that there is no moratorium on development projects in Kuala Lumpur.

“What I meant is that we have asked for development orders to be double-checked in the case of developments that have been approved, for which the development order (DO) has yet to be issued," said Maimunah.

“As for plans that have yet to be approved, we are double-checking to see if a geotechnical report has been submitted,’’ she added.

Maimunah added that this does not mean that all plans approved at the one-stop centre without a development letter have been halted.

She said that a recent report quoting a letter that she had issued internally to the planning department was misleading.

“We are merely putting a comma, not a full stop. News going around that I am stopping development in the city is incorrect. I am just being careful here," she said.

Maimunah added that she will be meeting with the Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association (Rehda) soon on the matter.

“We are being extra careful after the sinkhole incident in Masjid India," she added.

On the second sinkhole, Maimunah said that DBKL is working with all related agencies to ensure that areas around Masjid India are safe.

"We are not taking this matter lightly. All agencies have been asked to do integrity tests and we will continue to work closely with other agencies to ensure that comprehensive follow-up action is implemented to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future," she said.

"The safety and well-being of Kuala Lumpur residents is our top priority. DBKL will continue to monitor the situation and take appropriate measures to ensure public safety," she added

Maimunah was referring to the second sinkhole on Jalan Masjid India here, about 50m from where the ground suddenly collapsed last Friday (Aug 23).

The latest incident is said to have occurred at around 2.30am on Wednesday (Aug 28), believed to have been caused by the previous night's heavy rain and storm.

Checks at the location found that the sinkhole area has been cordoned off by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to prevent any untoward incidents.
