KUANTAN: Umno hopes to capitalise on the morale booster victory gained during the Nenggiri by-election in Kelantan last month in their attempt to retain the Mahkota state seat in Johor on Sept 28.

Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said the party will field a winnable candidate who is liked by the voters in the constituency.

"The fighting spirit and positive mood following the victory in Nenggiri will be vital (to secure a win) in Mahkota. The upbeat mood will continue in Mahkota.

"There is no discussion yet about the candidate...it will be decided by the president (Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi)," he told reporters at Wisma Sri Pahang today.

The Election Commission set Sept 28 for the Mahkota by-election, following the death of its incumbent, Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zin on Aug 2. Nomination and early voting will be on Sept 14 and 24 respectively.

Barisan Nasional and Umno's Sharifah Azizah was elected as the Mahkota representative during the state election on March 12, 2022.

On Aug 17, Barisan Nasional captured the Nenggiri state seat through its candidate Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani.

Meanwhile, Wan Rosdy earlier handed eight new Type A ambulance units worth RM455,000 each to six hospitals across Pahang.

He said the vehicles were among the 45 units approved by the Health Ministry for Pahang while 37 units of Type B ambulances with more sophisticated equipment will be delivered in stages between November this year and July next year.

The Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital here and Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital in Temerloh received two units of the Type A ambulances each. Pekan, Bentong, Lipis, and the Sultanah Hajjah Kalsom Hospital in Cameron Highlands received one unit each.
