GEORGE TOWN: There is reluctance to join the civil service but it offers the opportunity to contribute to national development, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The MCA president said he understands that there is some stigma and reluctance associated with joining the civil service.

"It is perceived to have bureaucratic inefficiencies and limited career progression.

"This can deter many talented individuals from considering this path.

"However, the truth is that a career in the civil service is not just about a job but about making a real impact on our society," he said in a Facebook post on Wednesday (Sept 4)

Dr Wee was sharing his insights after officiating the Civil Service and Uniformed Services Recruitment Briefing Programme 2024 at Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) here.

He said working for the civil service offers one the opportunity to contribute to national development, drive policy changes, and serve communities directly.

"At the programme, I encouraged those who are committed to public service and want to contribute to meaningful change to explore the opportunities available in the civil service," he said.

Dr Wee said the programme was organised to encourage more youngsters to join the government sector.

"Together we can build a stronger, more resilient community.

"Let us continue to work towards a future where everyone has a chance to contribute their skills and make a lasting impact," he said.

Dr Wee expressed his appreciation to the prime minister's political secretary Chan Ming Kai for initiating the campaign, which was co-organised by TAR UMT, the Federal Territories MCA Youth and Wangsa Maju MCA Youth.
