Johor MB on chemical pollution: Find the culprits now!

JOHOR BARU: Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has demanded immediate action to identify those responsible for a series of chemical pollution incidents affecting several housing estates.

During a visit to the latest site of contamination at Sungai Tebrau in Taman Kempas Heights, Onn Hafiz instructed the formation of a task force to tackle the issue.

He directive was stern put "get the culprits now, and get to the bottom of this issue now.

Onn Hafiz also directed relevant authorities to quickly assess the severity of the pollution.

Over the past week, several estates in Johor Baru have been plagued by a chemical odour.

Earlier, Onn Hafiz was also captured on video asking for reports of the situation, when he was told it was not ready- he sternly said, "I am here now, I want the report now, I am not here for a picnic!

The Johor Environment Department and the Fire and Rescue Department's Hazmat Unit are investigating the source of the pollution.

Water samples from affected areas are being analysed to identify the hazardous substances involved.

Initial findings revealed toxic chemicals in a nearby river, posing a serious health risk and causing a strong, unpleasant odour that raised concerns among residents.

Onn Hafiz has called for a special task force, including police and relevant agencies, to address the pollution and enforce strict measures against the perpetrators.

He also urged both industrial operators and the public to help maintain environmental cleanliness and protect public health for future generations.

Meanwhile, state Education and Information Committee chairman Aznan Tamin confirmed that two schools - SK Kampung Maju Jaya and SMK Kampung Maju Jaya were directed to close for the day.

This was after the students experienced symptoms including nausea, breathing difficulties and dry throats.
