KUALA LUMPUR: Several states in Peninsular Malaysia, as well as Sabah and Labuan, are expected to experience thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds this morning, potentially lasting until 11am.

According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), the affected areas include Pahang (Bentong, Temerloh, and Bera); Selangor (Klang, Gombak, Petaling, Kuala Langat, Hulu Langat, and Sepang); as well as Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

Other regions under alert include Negri Sembilan, Melaka (Alor Gajah), Johor Baru (Batu Pahat and Pontian), and Kuala Penyu in Sabah.

"A warning is issued when signs of thunderstorms are detected, with rainfall intensity exceeding 20 millimetres per hour, expected to persist for more than an hour. Thunderstorm warnings are short-term alerts, valid for up to six hours at a time," said MetMalaysia in a Facebook post today (Sept 15).

Last Thursday, MetMalaysia also issued a warning for strong winds and rough seas in the South China Sea and northern Straits of Malacca, in effect from Sept 13 to 18.

The department said the significant weather forecast was based on weather model analysis, pointing to wind convergence expected in these regions.
