KUCHING: Government service providers should harness new technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), to improve the delivery of social security to Malaysians, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

He stated that AI could enhance the speed and efficiency of distributing aid by the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and Social Security Organisation (Socso).

"We need to identify new methods in line with technological changes and consider technology holistically. AI has advantages such as making administrative systems more efficient, but it also presents challenges," he told reporters after opening an international conference on social security management here on Thursday (Sept 19).

The conference was organised by Universiti Utara Malaysia's Social Security Management Centre of Excellence.

Fadillah stressed the importance of ensuring data protection and security from cyberattacks and hackers.

He said this included measures to prevent fraudulent transactions or withdrawals.

"Hackers are getting more sophisticated, so we need to stay a step ahead. AI can be beneficial if used properly but can also pose a threat if used unethically," he said.

In his speech, Fadillah said AI had the potential to improve the accuracy of distributing social security benefits and enhance fraud detection and administrative efficiency.

"By harnessing these technologies, we aim to provide better support and security for all, ensuring that our social security systems are modern and inclusive," he said.

He noted that EPF was offering more digital services, including online account management and flexible withdrawal, while Socso had enhanced its digital platforms for easier access to its services.

Fadillah also said ongoing reforms and digital enhancements were essential to ensure that the systems remained robust, effective, and inclusive.

He highlighted that the integration of AI in social security systems offered opportunities and challenges that should be navigated ethically.

"As we embark on this journey, let us remain guided by our shared values of equity, transparency, and compassion. Let us work together to build a social security system that not only meets today's demands but prepares us for tomorrow's challenges and opportunities," he said.
