KUALA LUMPUR: Efforts to promote unity and harmony among Malaysia’s diverse races through the beauty of language and literature, such as poetry, should be expanded to include participation from various ethnic groups, including those from Sabah and Sarawak, says the National Unity Minister.

Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said these efforts aim to make language a primary tool for communication and a key connector in fostering unity, harmony, and a shared national identity.

“Language not only plays a fundamental role in nation-building but is also essential for conveying noble values that shape a moral and ethical society,” he said during his speech at the inauguration ceremony of the Sanggar Puisi Perpaduan 2024 programme yesterday, reported Bernama.

“The National Library of Malaysia (PNM) could organise events such as the Festival Puisi Rakyat.”

He said in addition to Malay poetry, Tamil, Mandarin and Iban poetry could also be accessed on a single platform, complete with translations or explanations.

This approach, he added, would enhance appreciation for the beauty of each language.
