=MARKET BUZZ: Malaysia's Construction Stocks Fall As MRT3's Tender Disappoints

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 07) -- Bursa Malaysia Construction index down 1.3% at 320.37 points, lowest since March as the MRT3's tender details bring negative surprise for Malaysian contractors.

"We believe that a foreign contractor is likely to be the turnkey lead. None of the Malaysian corporates are keen on the financing role, and will only choose to bid at the subcontractor level for portions of the MRT3," says Nomura Securities in investor note; expects lower margin for subcon package. Largest construction stock Gamuda down 4.3% at 8-Month low of MYR4.85, as the PDP (project delivery partner) role is eliminated.

Still, CIMB Investment Bank keeps Overweigh rating for construction sector, expects MRT3 would cost MYR40 billion, 25% higher than MRT2.

"We believe chances are still fairly strong for Gamuda to play a significant role in the construction of the MYR37 billion's 40km underground tunnel for MRT3 given its cost and logistics advantage, expertise in the geological settings of Klang Valley via MRT1 and MRT2," adds house; keeps Add call on stock.

Go take a look at their properties and enjoy the generous dividends offered (ie. lower margins by developer).
