PETALING JAYA: The use of anti-parasitic drug Ivermectin as an early intervention tactic could help to reduce the strain on Malaysia’s health system and put the country on the fast track to recovery, a health group has claimed.

The Malaysian Alliance for Effective Covid Control said that the treatment, which is not currently approved for use to treat Covid-19, is a safe and effective way to prevent more severe cases of the disease.

Currently, the health ministry, World Health Organization and the US-based Food and Drug Administration all do not recommend the use of Ivermectin to prevent or treat Covid-19.

Clinical trials in Malaysia for the use of the drug are underway, with these involving the drug’s application in high-risk, late stage patients.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Dr Amir Farid Isahak, who had his clinic raided last week for offering the drug to patients, put out an urgent appeal to the government regarding the need for a different strategy that includes Ivermectin.

“Globally, many countries are dealing with the pandemic differently, and based on these experiences we have to seriously consider using Ivermectin as a prophylactic and therapeutic modality,” he said.

“We plead with the government to exercise its emergency powers to fast-track the use of Ivermectin and appropriate supplements for immune enhancements for all individuals in quarantine stations and home quarantine.”

He cited 14 clinical trials of the drug as a prophylactic which showed 85% improvement, and 23 early treatment trials that showed 78% improvement.

“Large reductions in Covid-19 deaths are possible, and using Ivermectin early could reduce numbers progressing to severe disease. We are very confident this pandemic can be terminated sooner rather than later.”

While some trials of Ivermectin have shown promising results, many have been criticised for relying on small sample sizes or displaying elements of bias.

“We urge the government to position this drug and repurpose it as early therapy in patients,” Amir said.

PETALING JAYA: A doctor has confirmed that his private clinic was raided by the health ministry yesterday for supplying the anti-parasitic drug Ivermectin to his patients to prevent Covid-19 infection.

On May 16, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the ministry had not approved the use of Ivermectin to prevent or treat Covid-19 because there were no scientific studies to prove it was effective.

While Dr Amir Farid Isahak confirmed that his clinic in Kuala Lumpur was raided by the authorities, he declined to comment further, on the advice of his lawyer.

“I did make the statement, but my lawyer has advised me against making any statement at this time,” he told FMT.

In a separate statement that was circulated online yesterday, the doctor explained that the slow vaccination rate had convinced him to offer the drug to patients because it was proven to be “very safe”.

“I accept that the 58 scientific studies done so far are sufficient to prove its (Ivermectin’s) effectiveness although our health ministry and some doctors do not.

“Therefore, I acted according to what I believe, and according to my conscience, to try to save lives,” he continued, adding that he was prepared for the consequences if his actions came to the attention of the authorities.

However, he said the need to save people superseded any fears of legal action. “If the Ivermectin from me saved just one life, it is worth it,” he said.

FMT is seeking Noor Hisham’s response on the matter.

In early June, the health ministry and the health ministry’s Institute for Clinical Research began clinical trials to study the effects and effectiveness of Ivermectin to treat high-risk Covid-19 patients in 12 government hospitals.

Noor Hisham said at the time that the drug had received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat a wide spectrum of diseases, there was no conclusive evidence to recommend its off-label use for Covid-19 patients.

Ivermectin has attracted international attention following several case studies and clinical trials that showed promising results in treating Covid-19, but neither the FDA nor the World Health Organization has recommended it for use outside of such trials.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s poverty rate spiked to 8.4% in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, according to economic affairs minister Mustapa Mohamed.

In 2019, the poverty rate stood at 5.6%.

Mustapa said the pandemic had caused disruptions to people’s income, leading to many more households being exposed to poverty, especially for those in the B40 and most vulnerable categories.

" Since we failed to stop the spread of the virus, our PM Tan Sri Muhyiddin should have rung the Chinese Ambassador in KL or rung President Xi Jinping for the supply of Sinovac vaccines instead of buying the vaccines from Pharmaniaga who is the sole agent for Sinovac vaccines in Malaysia. "

NEW YORK (AP) — A new analysis of blood samples from 24,000 Americans taken early last year is the latest and largest study to suggest that the new coronavirus popped up in the U.S. in December 2019 — weeks before cases were first recognized by health officials.

The analysis is not definitive, and some experts remain skeptical, but federal health officials are increasingly accepting a timeline in which small numbers of COVID-19 infections may have occurred in the U.S. before the world ever became aware of a dangerous new virus erupting in China.

“The studies are pretty consistent,” said Natalie Thornburg of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

KUALA LUMPUR (June 15): While some analysts are maintaining their "buy" call on glove stocks, fund managers have turned cautious about the sector as a lower average selling price (ASP) is expected to lead to lower profits and valuations.

Fortress Capital Asset Management chief executive officer (CEO) Thomas Yong said the glove sector is now entering a phase of declining profit trend, caused by the normalisation of the ASP and lower sales volume due to logistic issues.

According to him, there is no longer any acute demand for gloves as vaccination rates in advanced countries have picked up the pace, leading to a drop in the number of active cases. Instead, only a moderate demand is seen for gloves.

"This has a significant impact on the sector as these countries, mainly the US and European countries, are the main revenue contributors of Malaysian glove companies," he told The Edge.

Yong also noted that the forced labour allegations by the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) against a leading rubber glove manufacturer has served to accelerate the ASP's declining trend. This is because the company has resorted to selling gloves to other countries at a lower price after it was banned from exporting to the US.

Malaysia’s Covid-19 vaccination rate has overtaken the average rate across Asia, with latest data showing the country is fast outpacing other major countries with vast populations in the Asean region.

Statistics on vaccination rates compiled by global data site Our World in Data placed Malaysia at the top in Asia as the only country whose vaccination rate is above the continent’s average.

It also showed a sharp upward trajectory as of May 30 in the rate of people given at least a first dose, in a sign of hope that the government’s goal of achieving herd immunity this year might be easily met.
