Khutbah: GST tak akan bebankan rakyat
Malaysiakini
1 Nov 2013

Record revenue for TNB as demand surged

TENAGA Nasional Bhd posted a RM4.6 billion net profit for the financial year ended August 31 2013, up from the RM4.4 billion recorded in the same period last year.

The higher profit ratio was due to better electricity sales in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, which grew at 4.3 per cent and 7.3 per cent, respectively.

Group-level revenue came in at a mind-boggling RM37.13 billion from RM35.84 billion previously.

TNB chairman Tan Sri Leo Moggie said for the financial year ending 2014, the electricity demand growth is expected to remain steady, bolstered by the improving global outlook and supported by domestic economic growth of 5.0 to 5.5 per cent, as announced in the 2014 Budget.

He said this after the company, one of the largest capitalised stock on Bursa Malaysia, announced its 12-month financial report card.

Still, 2013 would have been a much better year for TNB, if not for the foreign exchange losses in the last three months of its financial year.

Net profit for the fourth quarter slumped by more than two thirds, resulting in the utility reporting a net profit of RM219.4 million against the RM1 billion in the same period last year.

The forex losses were attributed to the weakening of the ringgit against the US dollar and the Japanese yen at 6.4 and 9.3 per cent, respectively.

TNB president and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Azman Mohd expects 2014 to be stable year and that demand for electricity will continue to be growth driven.

Leo Moggie said TNB was also the world's 66th best electric utility in 2012, up from 90th in 2011, as surveyed by Platts.
Platts monitors energy companies' financial performance by using four key metrics - revenues, asset worth, profit and returns in invested capital as the core yardstick.

With this in mind, Leo Moggie pledged that the utility will ensure reliable, sustainable and efficient supply of electricity for smooth implementation of Malaysia's reform initiatives under the Economic Transformation Programme.

Meanwhile, the utility has scrapped its bid for the retail arm of Ireland's Bord Gais Eireann, TNB chief financial officer said.

"We want to focus on our current projects, especially domestic ones," said its chief financial officer Fazlur Rahman Zainuddin.

Bord Gais Eireann announced in May that it had started the sale process for Bord Gais Energy, which sources said will fetch about e1.5 billion (RM$2.07 billion).

Bord Gais Energy has a 445 megawatt power plant, a portfolio of onshore wind assets and an energy distribution network business in Northern Ireland.

2] The reality on the ground and the grand speeches on the podium

Made up of 60 families, the BVIM protested for 4 hours - from 5pm to 9pm on Tuesday. They demanded action against Malaysian firm Doxport Technologies Sdn Bhd, which they alleged had cheated them of £2.5m (RM12.7 million) in 2008.

Azim, the chairman and director of Doxport Technologies, was also the former Umno treasurer. Hence the concerns of a Malaysian cover-up due to Azim's close connections with the top leaders in his country.

Azim has held many high corporate positions in Malaysia. He was also a director at Kuala Dimensi Sdn Bhd, the company at the centre of the scandal-ridden Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) project. Azim was chairman at Bank Simpanan Nasional from 1999 to 2009 and vice-president of the World Savings Bank Institute from 2006 to 2009.

The BVIM also wants action against Doxport senior execs - managing director Sivalingam Thechinamoorthy and director Gurmeet Kaur.

Where is the rule of law in Malaysia?

The disgruntled Bitish investors had in 2011 lodged complaints with the Bukit Aman police headquarters, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and the Companies Commission of Malaysia.

BVIM also issued a statement on Tuesday, questioning Malaysia's "rule of law" in protecting foreign investors.

“I invested my life savings because I liked Malaysia, my family is really suffering and it seems the law means nothing in Malaysia. I hope no one invests in Malaysia and suffers like us," said Mohammed, a bus driver from London, who had invested his life savings into the Malaysian firm.

The British investors had been told their money would be used to purchase switches for Telekom and equity in Doxport.

When they found out that there were no such Telekom switches operating in Malaysia, they reported the company to the authorities.

Earlier this year, they also filed a lawsuit against Azim and the company.

NAJIB 'HIDES' as irate British investors demand JUSTICE at World Islamic forum

LONDON/KUALA LUMPUR - It is ironical. While British Prime Minister David Cameron was busy lauding his Malaysian counterpart's 'fight' against extremism, thousands of miles away in the Southeast Asian nation, human rights activists were busy doing the opposite.

Indeed, rights groups such as Suaram and Amnesty International had their work cut out in Kuala Lumpur, debriefing Malaysian citizens on what had transpired at the United Nations review on human rights where Malaysia's worsening racial discrimination and eroding democratic space had raised grave concern among member states.

The startling, even surreal, display of political hypocrisy from Najib and Cameron was also underscored in London, where a group calling itself the British Victims of Investing in Malaysia had held a protest outside the Excel International Convention Centre, where Najib was participating in the World Islamic Economic Forum or WIEF.

Najib is the patron of the Malaysian-mooted WIEF, while Cameron the guest of honor.

"It was a well-attended and loud protest highlighting the suffering of British Investors who have invested in Malaysia. Many VIPs viewed the protest as their cars entered the event," the group, which calls itself the BVIM for short, had said on its Facebook.

Surreal hypocrisy

But despite the BVIM's best efforts, the Malaysian leader did not come out to meet them or send any messengers to speak with their representatives.

"I won't comment on Cameron, who should know what to do to help his own citizens. It is a good opportunity for him to raise the issue with Najib rather just gush out meaningless praise when there is so much evidence to the contrary," Opposition Member of Parliament for Ampang Zuraida Kamaruddin told Malaysia Chronicle.

"For Najib, as the leader of Malaysia, he should not hide but be open about this issue because it is a long outstanding case and has the support of many top people from both UK as well as Malaysia. These people are not frauds or troublemakers but investors who took the initiative to invest in our country. They deserve to be treated better and not be snubbed like this by our PM."

The BVIM has the support of 15 British Members of Parliament and House of Lords member Nazir Ahmed.

They were protesting the lack of action by the Malaysian authorities into their alleged embezzlement at the hands of a senior Umno politician Azim Zabidi.

Umno is Najib's political party and he had previously met and promised the BVIM a fair probe into their case. But so far, little if any progress has been made.

“It is ridiculous that after more than two years since we lodged a criminal case in Malaysia, that no charges have been made or people arrested. I will tell all my friends, colleagues and the people I meet never to invest in Malaysia,” said Steve, a bank worker from London.

Najib's grand London appearance marred by anti-corruption, human rights protests

Prime Minister Najib Razak faced his second protest in two days at the in London, as Londoners waved placards on corruption and unethical practices outside the World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) yesterday.

According to Suaram International, the protesters wanted to press home "recent crackdown on human rights and widespread electoral fraud in Malaysia" at the WIEF's closing ceremony at 6pm.

Gathering outside the Excel exhibition and convention centre at 5pm, protestors held placards such as 'Bersih Before Business', 'Cameron, Say NO to Corruption!', 'Stop Police Brutality!' and 'Stop Racism in Malaysia!'.

Expecting the arrival of a VIP from the UK government scheduled to speak at the event's closing ceremony, protesters were however told that the event had been brought forward at the last minute.

“I've come to remind Najib that the world is watching and if he really wants to interact on a global stage and advance Malaysia economically and socially he has to accept and implement international human rights norms and basic civil liberties.

"Najib's government is extremely un-Islamic and what they are trying to portray here in London is extremely hypocritical. We are sick and tired of it,” said one participant Mohamad Johari, according to Suaram.

Others who spoke to the human rights NGO expressed disappointment at the human rights abuses taking place in a country they used to think of as a "holiday paradise".

"I have come today to express my disgust to Najib and his government and to speak out for Malaysians who don't have a voice. Najib, how do you sleep at night?” said one participant, Sol.

On Wednesday, another group called British Victims of Investing in Malaysia (BVIM) held a protest at the same venue over the Najib government's inaction over a Malaysian company that had allegedly cheated UK investors of millions.

Meanwhile yesterday Najib, who is the patron of the WIEF, boasted of his good track record on human rights in an interview with CNN, but found himself in a bind when his credentials as a "moderate" and a self-claimed "democrat" were questioned.

yesterday reaction was towards the forex loss of Tenaga [if there is a forex gain like the previous years then Tenaga will make an extra $1 Billion] but overall Tenaga earnings has reached it projected target & still making good money for the year. Maybe we can see buying support next week but one bad factor is this biggest shark EPF keeps buying higher in lesser amount and selling then in larger lots at a higher price, damn. I presume you have seen this biggest shark keep pushing it down with 1 lot at 1 cent cheaper continuously and then buying it at that lower price and thereafter pushing it higher too to sell, damn. If you were to read the announcement, you will see that EPF buys less & sell more on the same day, now you know.

Mind you if Tenaga is NOT making profit for the year, then the dividend of 15 cents won't be coming. Buy & keep for mid or long term and see your money multiply.

I feel traders are still worried of the property sector as the buying of houses may slow down dues to the Property Gain Tax as less people want to buy house for speculation. But then on the other side of the coin, people may want to buy now as it's cheaper compare to the price that will increase due to the GST.

Yes, we do see some buying support yesterday and support is at $2.37 and yesterday being a Friday, we still see some upwards movement. This counter had been down alot since the announcement of the stupid UMNO-BN sponsored GST, damn. Perhaps you can start collecting in smaller lots now [ in case you miss the boat & the losses won't be too great if there's further slide] & built it up if it moves higher but do take a cautions stand will you. Even 'spiritual' Nik Aziz sees through them: BN has NO intention to lessen your burden!

PAS Mursyidul Am Tuan Guru Nik Aziz Nik Mat has reminded Sungai Limau voters that a vote for BN is a vote to support will more price increases in the future.

“The fuel price hike, Goods and Services Tax and others have proved that UMNO-BN has no intention to lessen the burden of the people in the bottom. They only give out sweeteners called BR1M (Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia) when election is around the corner but they take it back through price hike,” said Nik Aziz in a statement posted in his Facebook.

In the end, Nik Aziz said the people were left to suffer and live under pressure.

“Thus, the voters in Sungai Limau constituency must make the accurate choice to tell that the people are not willing to accept goods price hikes like this. A vote for UMNO-BN is a vote to support price hike,” the former Kelantan Menteri Besar stressed.

FY8/13 core net profit of RM4.1bn was broadly in line with our expectation,
accounting for 103% of our and 100% of consensus estimates. Core net profit
surged 21.8% yoy, underpinned by lower fuel costs on the back of a 3.6% yoy
growth in its topline. Tenaga remains an Outperform, with a stronger likelihood
of the IBR implementation by the beginning of 2014 being the catalyst. Our

A good year
FY13 revenue grew by 3.6% yoy to
RM37.1bn as the electricity demand
grew by 3.8% yoy. The average coal
price was significantly lower yoy at
US$83.6/MT vs. US$103.6/MT in
FY12. Core net profit of RM4.1bn was
higher by 21.8% yoy after taking out
the fuel cost compensation of
RM1.6bn (RM1.2bn net of tax) in
FY12. Despite the improvement in
gas supply due to the commissioning
of the regasification plant, Tenaga
continued to burn oil and distillates
to compensate for the higher
electricity demand. The company
expects the electricity demand to
continue to grow slightly below the
GDP growth, which implies growth
of 3.5-4.5% as the GDP for 2014 is

What We Think
We reiterate our optimism on SapuraKencana's bold transformational venture, which will give the company an immediate foothold in the exploration and production segment. Management has yet to release details but we understand that: 1) 91% of Newfield's pretax profit of US$427m in 2012 came from Malaysia, with the balance contributed by China, and 2) Newfield's Malaysian assets are cash-generating and debt-free. Given that SapuraKencana is still pursuing Newfield's assets in China, its pretax profit could double by FY1/15.

actually Tenaga make more than $836 million but the forex loss is a whopping $617 million whereas for the 3rd Qt report, it make forex gain of $324 million. If there is forex gain like the previous quarter then Tenaga profit will more than $1 billion.

As brother ijanto said, something is fishy...why so much in forex loss?

But brother eddiechang73 said it right too here

From the report, everything looks good, Revenue, Profit, EPS, Div.. so it should be positive. Future growth... ? Hike in tariff? Sarawak/Sabah?

So, it still is a good counter for investing.

Correct me if I am wrong please.

Maybe Tenaga play magic with the accounts as brother muscle had said above.....already meet target in 3rd Qt so 4rd Quarter create a different story to ask government maybe for a tariff hike? haahaahaa

But profit is a ok as for the whole year it is a 4.62% over over last year.

So, nothing to worry for me as I will be getting my dividend of 1 5 cents which I consider as good. A good for long term investment.

Cheers.
