Kementerian Pengangkutan akan mengkaji semula kaedah mengangkut bauksit menerusi darat dan laut di Kuantan yang kini dibantah secara meluas penduduk di sekitar kawasan perlombongan itu, kata Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

Menteri pengangkutan itu dilaporkan Utusan Malaysia hari ini berkata, kajian itu akan dilaksanakan susulan arahan Kabinet agar aktiviti perlombongan bauksit dihentikan buat sementara.

"Kita tahu ini satu isu yang perlu dikaji dari segi cara perlombongan yang lestari kerana kalau kita menggunakan cara sekarang, tidak selamat dan mencemar kawasan kita.

"Sebab itulah kita kaji bukan sahaja dari segi perlombongan tetapi pengangkutan juga, sebab bauksit halus ini ringan dan terbang dan menyebabkan seluruh kawasan menjadi merah," beliau dipetik berkata.

Sementara itu, laporan sama menyebut Kabinet memutuskan aktiviti perlombongan bauksit di Pahang dihentikan buat sementara dan langkah itu disifatkan tepat.

Bagaimana pun, akhbar itu tidak menyebut siapa yang mengulas langkah itu sebagai tindakan yang tepat.

Beberapa hari lepas, PKR menggesa Putrajaya campur tangan dalam isu bauksit di Kuantan dan membekukan semua lesen syarikat berkaitan dengan segera.

Ketua Penerangan Pemuda PKR Lee Chean Chung berkata, tindakan tegas perlu diambil memandangkan kerajaan Pahang seolah-olah tidak menyelesaikan isu tersebut.

Sebelum itu, pada 29 Disember, Bernama melaporkan air Sungai Balok dan pantai berhampiran bertukar warna seakan-akan merah dipercayai dicemari bahan galian bauksit selepas hujan lebat seharian.

Kedua-dua pelombong bauksit sah dan tidak sah menjadi kebimbangan disebabkan permintaan tinggi dari China dan Menteri Besar Pahang Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob dikritik kerana lambat menangani perlombongan tidak terkawal dan pencemaran yang dihasilkan.

Pada 7 Disember lalu Adnan berkata, Kementerian Sumber Asli dan Alam Sekitar serta kerajaan negeri akan mengumumkan pelan bersama menangani aktiviti perlombongan di negeri itu menjelang akhir bulan itu.

Pada November, satu petisyen ditandatangani 2,400 penduduk Kuantan menyeru semua aktiviti perlombongan bauksit dihentikan dibawa untuk perbahasan di Dewan Rakyat tetapi ditolak Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia. – 2 Januari
