When solid news come, many people will be selling.

The next big catalyst will be BJCorp signing of an business cooperation contract with Vietnam Lottery Company to operate a computerized NF lottery system for the whole of Vietnam. On 12 May 2014, BICorp announced the commencement of the business negotiation between the parties concerned after winning the bid.

Rumours were floating around last month about a possible firming up of a deal in Oct. The chairman's comments during last Friday's AGM seem to suggest a near conclusion is in sight.

A further increase of 50m more shares in his holding before December may bring on new excitement over this counter.

Yesterday the BJCorp-LD closed at 0.660, up from 0.625 on volume of traded 989,700 units.

It was announced today that VT had increased his shareholding in BJCorp by 26m ordinary shares by way of conversion of ICULS -LD yesterday after gaining entitlement of the 7th interest payment on 19 Oct ($650K weekend pocket money for him).

Why VT chosed to convert the ICULs when he can theoretically net more money by selling them straight into the market for cash and buy the mother shares straight off ditto is interesting to note. Perhaps it did not suit his agenda's timeframe since the LDs daily trading volume is low and will take a longer while to dispose without depressing the price. Or, just maybe, he is telling you the mother share's price is mighty low compared to what it will very soon be?!

By the way, VT has increased his holding three times since 29 Jun 2015. He acquired the following number of shares in the KLSE open market recently this year; 4,250,000 on 29 Jun, 1,597,300 on 30 Jun and 1,152,700 on 03 Jul. This time, on the 20 Oct, he increased his shareholding by converting his ICULS-LD into 26m OS. This four transactions totalled 33m new shares or approximately 0.79% of issued capital. If his cumulative shareholding increases by 2% of the issued capital from 09 Jun to 08 Dec 2015, it will trigger a mandatory takeover for the rest of the shares in BJCorp that is not owned by him.

We need a Gordon Gekko to teach some of our corporate leaders who run deeply undervalued plcs a lesson in corporate brinkmanship and greenmailing. If only we have in our midst a few ruthless raiders with deep pockets or adventurous IBs' backing to create some sparks in our sleepy stockmarket. Yeah, snatch away a plc or 2, cleanup the messy structures, strip down the assets, selloff or fire the non performers and unleash the real value of the companies.

But I digress, haha ...

MyView, I had been taking cursory peeks at this counter since 2006 but never touched it because of VT's reputation in the market until Oct 2014. I started collecting the stock at the 0.480 level during the correction from then's high of 0.605 all the way down to 0.350. My holding is bottom heavy averaging 0.415. I had received a 1c dividend last year, am entitled to receive another 1c this Dec, and had made trading profits of around 3c per share of my holding over the year.

If your entry had been much earlier and average higher, you would have to work harder for more trading profits to make the waiting more palatable.

In the last decade, they have ventured into Vietnam, China, South Sorea and Japan with muted returns so far. Although ambition, courage and drive are not lacking in the management, are they finding the ocean waters too deep to handle compared with the local rivers.

However in fairness, the growth they have achieved largely based on high leverage as the business expanded in the last decade is very commendable (not to mention the hidden real assets value)

I am satisfied with the performance given the parameters they are working with. 1c yearly dividend, more occasionally whenever possible with once a decade harvest bonanza in manifold capital appreciation will be great.

I am not too hot about AAI and AAJ.

AAI has only been in operations for around 16 months with a current fleet size of only five A320-200. AA is the first foreign airline to setup an affiliate in India. The market environment harsh and competitive, and pricing wars are to be expected. On top of that, there is friction between the 2 local partners.

AAJ is still in the pre-operation stage and is a second attempt at Japan. AA shall have to contend with the almost freakish Japanese obsession with perfection in all things superficial. Everything must look right, shapes. sizes. colour, packaging, rituals, services ... or you lose market share. It is a tall cultural wall to climb before you start blending in.

IAA and PAA have better potential and achievable prospects. Both operations have been up and running for several years now, and the teething problems are done and over with already. The fleet sizes (IAA 29 A320-200, IAA-X 2 A330-300, PAA 28 A320-200) are significant and will contribute meaningfully to the top and bottom lines of AA soon.

IAA was becoming profitable when the unfortunate 28 Dec 2014 Flight 8501 deferred any probable turnaround. Both IAA (revamped with IAA-X) and PAA may be IPO'ed in 2016.

The Malaysian operation of AA and TAA are both sailing smoothly and profitable.

I am holding on to my AA shares long term or until significant adverse news develop. Who knows 3.00 may not be that far away? AA can be a takeover target too.

Are the Indon shareholders paying cash to AA when taking up their 51% of the perpetual securities converted from IAA's debt to AA or will the amount due remain as an indefinite debt owed by them to AA?

There are gaps in their announced info with respect to meeting the Indon authorities' positive equity requirement before entering this month. I am sure it is being addressed though in a tacit grace period allowed by the authorities.

If the Ringgit drops further and leads to excessive costs buildup, AA can price their fares accordingly to cover the extra costs outside the normal band of fluctuations allowed in their pricing formulae. I am sure AA will still be competitive since most countries' currencies are moving down against the greenback.

I am concerned that it may not be a transient episode of low Ringgit but the result of PM's high income aspirations whereby salaries and wages have gone up without a matching or out-performing productivity in the last few years.

While our economy has expanded led by increased domestic consumption, not all the increased income has been spent locally. A lot has gone overseas through overseas holidays, imported goods, foreign workers, investments, etc. Due to lack of business opportunities in the country, a lot of capital has moved overseas looking for returns.

However AA has a superb management team which is fairly young and vibrant. They are world beaters and should be versatile enough to adjust to any new changes in their business environment.

Headwinds against AirAsia abating
September 16, 2015, Wednesday

KUCHING: According to market data provided by Bursa Malaysia on regulated short selling, daily short value on AirAsia Bhd (AirAsia) has reduced from a daily average of RM706,000 in the first week of September to RM335,000 in the second week of September.

MIDF Amanah Investment Bank Bhd’s research arm (MIDF Research) noted that this is also a major improvement from RM1 million to RM2 million average seen in previous months.

“We also believe that short sellers have been covering their positions by buying back the stock as share price rose 60 per cent off its RM0.77 low, typical in a short squeeze situation,” it said.

According to the Jakarta Post, Indonesia AirAsia’s (IAA) shareholders have agreed to convert its accounts payables into Redeemable and Convertible Preference Shares (RCPS) which is the first hurdle in its efforts to reducing its payables to AirAsia and raising its equity into positive position.

Currently, the proposal is awaiting approval from the Indonesian Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM).

“We believe that completion of the corporate exercises could lift a major overhang over the stock as IAA’s weak balance sheet position has been a major concern for investors,” it opined.

The Indonesian transport ministry has lowered the price floor for domestic flights to 30 per cent of an ascribed price ceiling from 40 per cent previously.

The move will bode well for AirAsia as it had recently focused on serving international routes as domestic routes had become uncompetitive due to the imposition of higher fares.

Thus, with the price floor returning to 30 per cent of the ceiling, AirAsia could move some of its excess capacity to serve domestic trunk routes.

In the aftermath of the horrifying bombing in one of Bangkok’s busiest districts, the Thai Tourism Ministry stated that average daily tourists arrivals fell by 17 per cent from 85,000 to 70,000.

“While we opine cancellations and flight deferments are a given due to concerns on safety, we however believe that the impact will likely be less pronounced and prolonged than the political/civil unrest situation seen previously.

“In addition, the tragedy could be isolated as no terrorist group has claimed responsibility thus far.

“Adding to that, we believe that one overhang over AirAsia’s share price performance year to date is the weakening of the ringgit against the US Dollar. We estimate that 64 per cent of operating expenses are US Dollar denominated.

“As eight per cent of operating costs are hedged to reduce the impact from foreign exchange volatility, the impact of every five per cent drop in the ringgit equals to an increase in operating cost by three per cent. Separately, 73 per cent of its US Dollar borrowings are hedged,” noted MIDF Research.

“We believe that average fares will begin trending upwards as the frequency reductions and fare rationalisation exercise by Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAB) takes effect in 3Q15.

“In addition, the discount between MAB and AirAsia’s ticket prices are seen to have widened from 10-20 per cent in 2013-2014 to a more reasonable 20 per cent-30 per cent as MAB prices its tickets more akin to a full service carrier. This could be a positive streak for AirAsia as stubbornly low yields (RASK) has been a major impediment to its profitability.”

I do not agree with this government intervention in our stock market. What is the point, what are the objectives? To boost our market up, push prices up, why? Is it a healthy thing to do? Do we have a serious market crisis on our hand? I don't think so. No doubt there are a lot of factors weighing down our stockmarket. Please treat the causes, not the symptoms and no thanks for the steroids.

If they can scrap together the RM20b to pass onto Valuecap, let us hope the money will be properly and well utilised, if you know what I mean.
