The airline last raised funds almost a year ago through a US$1 billion rights issue. It also raised RM7.8 billion (US$2.36 billion) through Islamic bonds and a special purpose vehicle owned by the Finance Ministry to buy planes in mid-2012.

The rights issue was backed by Khazanah Nasional Bhd, which owns 69 percent of MAS.

Shares of the Bursa-listed company had been trading at 70 sen/share in early 2013 before plummeting to 30 sen in July last year. After the MH370 incident, the share prices further eased to trade at about 20 sen/share.

Last month, MAS chief executive officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya (right) noted that an airline would need at least six months to recover from a market reputation issue after MH370, but stressed that MAS would do it sooner.

Despite a 27 percent improvement in passenger traffic in 2013, the national carrier not only failed to turn a profit but more than doubled losses from the previous year. It suffered a net loss of RM1.2 billion.

Even before MAS prompted the world's biggest aviation hunt with the loss of a Boeing 777 with 239 passengers onboard on March 8, the airline had issues.

Nazri however told Gulf News that the transport minister will be the decision maker and refused to say whether the government remained confident in MAS’ senior management.

"To inject new capital is certainly not an option," he had said at a tourism fair in Dubai.

The report also said that senior management at the government-owned airline could also be on the chopping block.

Gulf News reported Nazri as saying that the government is at a loss over what to do with MAS, the fourth largest Southeast Asia carrier, which has been struggling in a competitive environment, even before MH370 clipped its wings further.

Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz said the government has ruled out cash injection to rescue Malaysian Airlines (MAS), which has not turned a profit in the last three years.

In view of the above and as ASUPREM is unable to submit the AAA 2013 on or before 8 May 2014, the trading of ASUPREM's securities will be suspended with effect from 9.00 a.m., Friday, 9 May 2014 until further notice.

In i3, I see people commenting that they are big trader, big investor, pHd in finance, accountant, remisier and etc. Fine, good for them. but in real world, that is nth.

Fund managers are shrewd investors and they typically buy cheap because of their financial muscles. Do you all think Pelaburan Mara Bhd is so stupid to buy the 26.83% block from Robert Tan at $0.18 and let you ikan bills investors who buy small and at prices cheaper than them? Oh come on, wake up lah

Wouldn't this be in breach of international aviation regulations? This alone would expose MAS to liabilities due to breach of basic duty of care.

I remembered in an earlier military reply made in the earlier stages, the Air Force chief said that it was only a blip on his radar and doesn't know whether it was a Boeing 777 or for that matter MH370.

He had to ask the foreign aviation experts to determine it was actually MH370 and that took them several days wasting valuable time. Now he said he assumed that the control tower ordered the turn back.

Obviously, he is lying through his teeth. The real frightening truth is that mediocrity had permeated the whole military and that its time were spend in surveillance for BN rather than the country.

Despite this, MAS did not issue any statement to contradict the views of the authorities. If the Malaysian government thinks nothing is damaged, then they are even more stupid than is thought capable. Every MAS employee probably believes that MAS refuses to protect loyal staff and is quite prepared to dump them when things get turbulent. MAS have failed the families of Zaharie and Fariq.

There was no evidence against Zaharie. The authorities were grasping at straws. They used recycled theories, gleaned from various sources, to hurl accusations at the pilots.

So, when Najib’s administration made Zaharie a scapegoat, and the MAS CEO failed to support his pilots, the confidence of MAS employees, potential investors and airline customers was severely shaken.

MAS pilots are professionals and have gone through rigorous selection, training and regular evaluation. The pilots’ political beliefs have no bearing on their professionalism.

The failure of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) to defend its own pilots is disgraceful. The reputations of MH370 Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah and co-pilot Fariq Abdul Hamid are being dragged through the mud, but MAS cannot or will not come to their defence. Why?
