Bumi Armada tight-lipped on Fredriksen VLCC links

Bumi Armada is being strongly linked with the purchase of a veteran VLCC from John Frediksen's Ship Finance International.

Well-placed tanker broking sources in Singapore this week said Kuala Lumpur-listed operator floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel operator was the buyer of the 300,000-dwt Front Ariake (built 2001.

John Fredriksen-controlled Ship Finance International revealed on 1 October that the ship had been sold for $20.7m.

TradeWinds has previously reported the tanker was understood to be set for conversion.

Bumi Armada’s senior vice-president of investor relations, communication and sustainability Jonathan Duckett declined to confirm or deny the deal.

He told TradeWinds that the company did not comment on any market rumours about possible vessel purchases.

FPSO operators such as Bumi Armada traditionally acquire conversion candidates against longterm contracts with oil producers.

The company has been touted as the frontrunner for a tender to provide an FPSO for Eni’s Nigerian Agip Exploration’s Zaba Zaba.

TradeWinds sister newspaper Upstream reported in May that Bumi Armada’s bid was valued at $7.62bn.

The company is also said to be taking part in several other tenders for projects elsewhere in the world.

Executive director and chief executive Leon Harland recently told Malaysian media that there has been a rapid increase in requests from clients for tenders, in particular for FPSO vessels.

He stressed that the company would maintain a targeted approach for new tenders, focusing only on new projects that would fit well with its capabilities and come together with strong project fundamentals.

Bumi Armada’s website indicates that it currently has nine FPSOs in its fleet. The company also operates a fleet close to 30 offshore service vessels
