Indonesia and Malaysia plan to mount a joint offensive to shore up the palm oil industry against criticism of the deforestation and conflicts associated with the production of the commodity.
The leaders of the two countries allege that the EU, which plans to phase out palm-based biodiesel as a renewable energy, is discriminating to protect its own vegetable oil producers.
Top government and industry leaders in Indonesia have declared a “black campaign” against their European competitors and against Indonesian NGOs calling for a more sustainable palm oil industry.
Activists have expressed dismay at the prospect of a PR war, saying the money and effort would be better spent on bringing actual reforms aimed at sustainability.

The Star
KUALA LUMPUR: The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has directed personnel at all US ports of entry to begin seizing disposable gloves produced by Top Glove Corp Bhd in Malaysia.
This comes after the CBP Office of Trade published a forced labour finding against disposable gloves produced in Malaysia by Top Glove in the Customs Bulletin and in the Federal Register.
“Today’s forced labor finding is the result of a months-long CBP investigation aimed at preventing goods made by modern slavery from entering US commerce.
“CBP will not tolerate foreign companies’ exploitation of vulnerable workers to sell cheap, unethically-made goods to American consumers," said Troy Miller, Senior Official Performing the Duties of the CBP Commissioner, in a statement released today.
The finding expands upon a Withhold Release Order (WRO) that the CBP issued in July 2020, which was based on reasonable but inconclusive information that there were elements of forced labour in Top Glove's production process.
These included debt bondage, excessive overtime, abusive working and living conditions, and retention of identity documents.
Bernama reported that Top Glove's US counsels are liaising with representatives from the US CBP to obtain more clarity and information on CBP’s recent Finding Information Document.

Using the pretext of "forced labor" to pressure and sanction other countries' companies has been an old trick by the US, which is now exerting extreme pressure on companies in cotton-related industries in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
Apart from creating lies about "forced labor", anti-China forces in the US and the West have also released reports, held hearings and taken other measures to slander China's Xinjiang policies. They have also tried to draw US and European companies, including Adidas and Nike, into their campaign. They have also persuaded the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), a nongovernmental organization with head offices in Geneva and London that aims to promote better standards in cotton farming, to suspend licensing in China's Xinjiang region, even though it contradicts the results of its own Shanghai office's investigations.

Salem police urge people to avoid Capitol area due to protest, counterprotest
The Salem Police Department is urging residents and visitors to stay away from the Capitol Mall area due to a protest, and saying that 150 to 200 heavily armed participants are in the area.
Opposing protestors are expected to arrive in large numbers, increasing the risk to public safety, according to a tweet from the SPD at about 2:30 p.m.
The agency announced on Twitter that it had received reports that vehicles driving past the Capitol are being struck with balloons filled with paint and green lasers are being pointed at drivers.
Those observing criminal behavior should immediately move to a safe location and call 911, according to the SPD.

U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell told lawmakers on Tuesday that U.S. economic recovery remains uneven and far from complete, and the path ahead is highly uncertain.
The central bank last month decided to hold its policy rate near zero and continue its asset purchase program at least at the current pace of 120 billion U.S. dollars per month until it sees "substantial further progress" in employment and inflation.
While the Congress is moving ahead with President Joe Biden's 1.9-trillion-U.S.-dollar COVID-19 relief package, Powell doesn't see persistent inflation pressures in the coming months.

CAHYA Mata Sarawak Bhd’s (CMS) earnings forecast for the financial year 2021 (FY21) and FY22 has been revised upwards on expectations of higher income from its associates OM Materials (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd and Kenanga Investment Bank Bhd.
RHB Investment Bank Bhd (RHB Research) raised the conglomerate’s earnings forecast for the next two years by 9% and maintained a ‘Buy’ call on CMS with a higher target price (TP) of RM2.90 from RM2.40.
“Earnings prospects for CMS’ associates OM Materials and Kenanga Investment are turning more upbeat on the ferroalloy selling price rebounds and buoyant equity trading turnover year-to-date.
“This prompts us to raise our FY21-FY22 forecast earnings by 9% to between RM217 million and RM233 million, suggesting an upside risk to the current FY21 consensus forecast of RM170 million,” its analyst Lester Siew said in a note yesterday.
