Businessman Datuk Anuar Othman is making a comeback to the corporate world in the potential takeover the National Feedlot Corporation (NFCorp) Sdn Bhd's cattle farming project.

Anuar, the right-hand man of corporate kingpin, Tan Sri Halim Saad (picture), back in the 90's is said to have vested interest in the takeover via an investment-linked company, VC Mahawangsa Sdn Bhd.

A source close to the deal said Anuar who holds the position as the executive chairman of VC Mahawangsa, has offered to takeover NFCorp's assets and liabilities.

It is not known if this news confirms that Anuar and Halim have kissed and made up following their acrimonious parting of ways. 

However, according to sources, Halim Saad was present in at least one meeting with senior NFC officials.
"The beef business is a RM2 billion a year industry and annual profits are RM400 million.

"So even if NFC gets 10%, you are talking about RM40 million," said an industry source.

The business could have taken off if the government had fulfilled its obligations of the agreement by building the abattoirs as it was supposed to, the source added.

A press conference to announce the sale of shares between NFCorp and VC Mahawangsa was scheduled to take place at Doubletree by Hilton here yesterday. However, the event was called off by organisers.

"The press conference was called off because the deal has yet to be properly finalised. 

"There are still issues that need to be trashed out and once those concerns are addressed, a proper announcement would be made.

"One party was probably too eager to make the announcement … which is premature at this point," the source added.

NFCorp, the company that runs the controversial National Feedlot Centre (NFC) is owned and operated by Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil's family.

On March 12, last year, Shahrizat's husband Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Salleh Ismail, in his capacity as the director of NFCorp was charged with CBT amounting to RM9,758,140 to fund part purchase of two units of condominium in Kuala Lumpur and transferring RM40 million into the account of National Meat & Livestock Corporation Sdn Bhd in 2009.

Mohamad Salleh who is also NFCorp executive chairman, has maintained that not all the RM250 million soft loan from the government was utilised, and the company was in fact still servicing the loan.

He had argued that the purchases of high-end condominiums were investments to reap profits to service the loan.

Supporters of Salleh and his wife have blamed the failure of the Agriculture Ministry to build export quality abattoirs for NFC's inability to make the project a success.

Halim Saad fails in appeal to reinstate RM1.8bil suit

 Halim Saad has failed in his appeal to reinstate a RM1.8 billion civil suit against Khazanah Nasional Berhad and two others over his settlement to give up control of Renong Berhad.

A three-member Court of Appeal panel chaired by Justice Zaharah Ibrahim, today unanimously dismissed the business tycoon’s appeal which he had filed in a bid to reverse a High Court decision that threw out his civil suit against the three respondents.

“We find that the High Court judge’s conclusion that the plaintiff’s (Halim) claim was obviously unsustainable on the grounds of limitation period had set in, and the accord of satisfaction is correct,” she said.

Zaharah, who presided on the panel with justices Mah Weng Kwai and Varghese George Varughese, ordered Halim to pay RM25,000 in legal costs to Khazanah and another RM25,000 to former minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nor Mohamed Yakcop and the government.

On Oct 31, last year, High Court judge Hanipah Farikullah allowed the application brought by Khazanah, Nor Mohamed and the government to strike out Halim’s civil suit ruling that it (the suit) was filed out of time, beyond the six-year time frame as stipulated under the Limitation Act 1953.

The former executive chairperson of Renong Bhd had filed the suit against Khazanah, Nor Mohamad and the government on April 17, last year, seeking to reclaim over RM1.8 billion in compensation for selling his stake in the company.

In the statement of claim, Halim said in 2001, he owned 372,000,000 shares amounting to approximately 16 per cent of the issued and paid-up capital of Renong, making him the single largest individual shareholder in the company.

He said in November 2002, Nor Mohamed was appointed as director of Khazanah and at all material times, Renong held a substantial stake in the issued and paid-up capital of a company known as United Engineers (M) Bhd (UEM).

Halim claimed he was induced by Nor Mohamed as an agent representing the government for him to take up the deal for his exit from Renong and UEM.

He was seeking RM1.3 billion in general damages for breach of the Renong purchase obligation, another RM508 million being the value of paid-up capital of Kualiti Alam Sdn Bhd in settlement of Halim’s losses for rescuing Fleet Group, and damages for fraudulent misrepresentation.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has rejected Tan Sri Halim Saad's offer to take over expressway owner and operator PLUS Bhd.

The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Wahid Omar said the government had studied Halim's proposal and concluded the assumption and information put forward were not correct.

"Therefore, the government had decided not to consider the plan put forward by the company," he said in a written reply in Parliament on Wednesday.

To recap, in March 2014, Halim had put in an unsolicited bid to take over PLUS Malaysia Bhd, the largest toll concessionaire in the country that is currently owned by UEM Group Bhd and the Employees Provident Fund (EPF).

StarBiz had reported then the former Renong Bhd executive chairman, had through his private investment vehicle Idaman Saga Sdn Bhd, planned to maintain the toll rates at current levels if he takes over PLUS.

Halim had also proposed to maintain the rates until the concessions end in 2038.

The UEM Group and the EPF took over PLUS in 2011 in a RM23bil deal and they own a 51% and 49% stake respectively.

Proreka aims to list in three years

YOKOHAMA: Proreka (M) Sdn Bhd, Malaysia’s tier-1 vendor and manufacturer of automotive parts and components, is targeting a main market listing on Bursa Malaysia or foreign bourses within three years.

Its executive director, Thomas Lim, said a good strategy to fast-track the listing process would be to collaborate with another company.

“We are looking at a Malaysian company in the automotive industry to collaborate and tap each other’s expertise to expand into new markets,” Lim said.

Proreka is one of nine Malaysian companies participating in the Automotive Engineering Exposition 2010 (AEE) being held here, spearheaded by the Japan External Trade Organisation and the Malaysia External Trade Development Corp.

Currently, Proreka operates three factories in Selangor, one in Puchong and the other two in Sungai Buloh.

Lim said Proreka was confident of achieving a higher turnover this year given the fact that car sales were anticipated to improve following the global economic recovery.

“We are projecting turnover to exceed RM50mil this year.

“Our focus now is the Asean market. We are hoping to penetrate the Middle East market in the next two to three years,” he said.

Proreka is confident it can penetrate the Middle East market, having gained valuable experience from its participation in the recent Malaysia Services Exhibition in Dubai coupled with Matrade’s support.

He said the company ventured into India two years ago and has a representative joint venture company there. Proreka’s technical partners are from Japan, Taiwan and South Korea.

Lim also said Proreka established technical collaboration with two Japanese partners, Taica Corp and Tech Art Co, to meet global quality standards for auto parts and body kits. — Bernama

“At the AEE in Yokohama, we see opportunities to collaborate with potential Japanese partners who can provide us with more advanced technology. We are also able to provide Japanese companies a gateway into Malaysia and the Asean market.

“Proreka hopes to export directly to Japan in two to three years and the AEE is a good platform for us to collaborate with Japanese partners.

“We are also eyeing to penetrate the European and US markets within five years,” he said.

He added the major stumbling block faced by many Malaysian companies, in taking the first step to venture overseas, was the lack of confidence.

Lim admitted that players in the industry also faced difficulty in sourcing the right professionals in the automotive industry.       “We invest an average of RM110,000, annually, to train our staff by providing them international and practical exposure in Taiwan and Japan,” he said.
