Ekovest-Samling JV for RM2.1 bil Pan Borneo highway job is now void

KUALA LUMPUR (Jun 5): Ekovest Bhd’s joint venture agreement (JVA) with Samling Resources Sdn Bhd to jointly undertake the development and upgrading of the Pan Borneo Highway in the state of Sarawak — Phase 1 for work package contract WPC-02 (Semantan to Sg Moyan Bridge and KSR Interchanges) — with a total contract value of RM2.1 billion, is now void, according to a filing with Bursa Malaysia.

The board of directors at Ekovest announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Ekovest Construction Sdn Bhd (ECSB) has received a letter on June 4 from Samling Resources, informing that Lebuhraya Borneo Utara Sdn Bhd (LBU), the project delivery partner for the project, has not consented for the project to be sub-contracted to Samling-Ekovest JV Sdn Bhd.

“We are reserving our rights in relation to the above matter and are seeking advice and will take all necessary actions as may be required,” the filing with Bursa said.

It added that the latest development will not have any material impact on the operations and financials of the Ekovest Group.

At closing, Ekovest’s share price gained by 2.48% or 1 sen to close at 62 sen with about 17.8 million shares traded, giving it a market capitalisation of RM1.35 billion.

KUALA LUMPUR (May 31): The rehiring programme for illegal workers will be phased out by June 30, Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced today.

"After this date, all dealings with vendors appointed earlier will be terminated. No extension will be allowed.

"The public and employers can deal with the Malaysia Immigration Department directly for all types of services on hiring foreign workers," he said in a statement.

Implemented from Feb 16, 2016, the rehiring programme serves as an avenue to provide illegal foreign workers valid working permit to fulfil labour requirement for certain sectors, including manufacturing, construction, plantation, agriculture and services.

Until May 28, a total of 744,942 illegal foreign workers and 83,919 employers had registered under the programme, said Muhyiddin.

Bursa Malaysia-listed electronic services solution provider My EG Services Bhd is one of three government-appointed agents for the programme run by the immigration department.

Meanwhile, Muhyiddin said the voluntary surrender programme, or more commonly known as the 3-plus-1 Programme, will be continued until Aug 30, to allow all illegal foreign workers who are not qualified to go through the rehiring programme to return to their home country voluntarily.

However, the immigration department will conduct large-scale enforcement operations throughout the country after June 30 to crack down on illegal foreign workers and employers who hire such workers.

"The government will not compromise in ensuring employers and foreign workers comply with the rule of law in this country. Such strict action has to be taken to resolve the issue of widespread illegal foreign workers in this country," said Muhyiddin.
