Foreign buyers back but early days still, says MIDF Research

Institutional investors flocked back to the market after the Chinese new year break, but retailers remained on the sideline during the week ended Feb 27, according to MIDF Research.

In his weekly fund flow report Monday, MIDF Research head Zulkifli Hamzah said that while foreign investors might be making a comeback on Bursa, it was still early days to draw any meaningful conclusion.

He explained that after two weeks of selling, investors classified as “foreign” bought, on a net basis, local equity in the open market amounting to RM175 million net.

KLCI expected to trend cautiously higher

Affin IB vice president and head of retail research Datuk Dr Nazri Khan said that going forward, he expects Bursa to build on its past three month momentum (where the FBM KLCI gains a total of 145 points or 8.6% since Dec 17, 2014) to trend higher towards 1850 resistance level, driven by accommodative Federal Reserve policy, positive external sentiment, positive global economic data and rising oil price.

“We note a round of bullishness sweep across the global equity markets in response to last week testimony from Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen and a series of positive global macro data (China Manufacturing, USA Home Sales, USA Inflation, Europe Unemployment).

“We expect many Asian bourses including Bursa to gear up the upside momentum, with MSCIAll-World and FTSE All -World equity index (2.3% & 2.5% w-o-w) rose to its best close since May 2008,” he said.

Nazri said a pick-up in China’s manufacturing sector also supports the broadly optimistic mood in the Asian markets.

U.S. stocks rallied on Friday to close at highs on an eleventh-hour resolution between Greece and its creditors in the euro zone.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed up more than 150 points, its first record close for 2015.

Deal reached between Greece, creditors

Greece and its euro zone creditors reached a deal to extend Greece's bailout for four months, Eurogroup head Jeroen Dijsselbloem said on Friday.

The euro traded near session highs of about $1.14 against the U.S. dollar and stocks rallied after the announcement. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 closed at fresh records on Friday.

European finance ministers came to the agreement Friday as failure to reach a deal threatened Greece's solvency. The extension will give Greece time to negotiate a follow-up arrangement with creditors as it attempts to undertake fiscal reforms.

"The Greek authorities have expressed their strong commitment to a broader and deeper structural reform process aimed at durably improving growth and employment prospects, ensuring stability and resilience of the financial sector and enhancing social fairness," the Eurogroup said in a statement.

Soros shifts money to Europe, Asia as investors cut U.S. stocks

Soros Fund Management, the family office of billionaire hedge fund manager George Soros, cut its holdings in U.S. stocks in the fourth quarter and shifted assets globally.

Soros, which manages almost $30 billion, moved about $2 billion into companies in Asia and Europe, according to a person familiar with the strategy. The New York-based firm returned about 8 percent in 2014 and is up 1.5 percent this year, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the firm is private.

BURSA : Positive Sentiment To Lift Bursa Higher Next Week By Zairina Zainudin

KUALA LUMPUR -- Market sentiment on Bursa Malaysia is expected to remain positive next week, giving a further lift to the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI).

Affin Hwang Investment Bank Head of Retail Research Datuk Dr Nazri Khan said last Friday’s positive sentiment, boosted by external news like the ceasefire in Ukraine, rising oil prices, easing of tension over the debt repayment of Greece and further central bank policy accommodation in China and Sweden, would spur risk appetite next week.

“In Asia, we saw a strong overnight showing, driven by liquidity injection from China’s central bank and overall regional currency strength,” he added.

He told Bernama the recent back-to-back strong positive economic data released by Bank Negara Malaysia of 5.8 per cent fourth quarter 2014 and full year growth of 6.0 per cent, suggested that the country’s economic fundamentals remained intact, and would influence sentiment.

This is alongside Standard and Poor’s Rating Services having reaffirmed Malaysia’s currency ratings with a stable outlook, Bank Negara’s strong international reserves of RM386.5 billion as at Jan 30, 2015 and a 7.4 per cent growth in the Industrial Production Index (IPI).

GHL SYSTEMS BHD

WITH the push towards 800,000 card terminals by 2020, the immediate beneficiaries from Bank Negara’s reforms are the companies that directly supply solutions and terminals for the payment sector.

E-payment services provider GHL Systems Bhd’s transaction payment acquisition (TPA) business is expected to benefit from Bank Negara’s efforts to boost cashless transactions in the country.
It is one of the leading payment solutions providers in South-East Asia with a market cap of RM522mil.

Out of Malaysia, it targets to grow its presence in other markets such as the Philippines.
It has the lion’s share in the Philippines, supplying about half of the 120,000 terminals in the archipelago.

Brent back above $60 as 1986 fears fade

U.S. crude rose by nearly $1 a barrel on Friday, and was trading above $52 a barrel by 10:00 p.m GMT (5:00 a.m. EST). Brent crude for April delivery opened at $59 a barrel and rose above $60 a barrel for the first time this year.

The latter has seen gains of around 4 percent so far this week, tracking similar gains over the previous seven days.

While oil experts still expect a period of major volatility ahead, a growing number are more upbeat that prices could edge towards the $100-per-barrel level by year-end.

"The good news is that demand is responding and responding quite well," Amrita Sen, chief oil analyst at Energy Aspects, told CNBC Friday. "All the indications so far is that it's rising thanks to the lower oil prices. So I think there is some good news."

Sen said that she believes oil will be range-bound between $40 and $50 for the first half of 2015, before rising to $70 or $80 in the second half of the year.
