新款蘋果 iPhone 6s 和 6s Plus，首度由兩家廠商代工蘋果自行設計的處理器 A9，也就是台積電和三星。此事台灣科技業、股民人盡皆知。直到著名的美國網站 iFixit 拆解兩款蘋果剛上市手機，發現台積電和三星製造的 A9 處理器，型號竟然不同，且可輕易辨識之後，全球才引發一股實測「台積貨」與「三星貨」效能差異的熱潮。

全球網友並驚訝的發現，依播放影片、跑測試軟體等不同方法，台積版處理器最高可比三星版省上近 30% 的電力。

之後在香港與其他國家掀起的拒買「三星貨」聲浪，逼著蘋果出面回應。蘋果發給美國著名科技網站 Techcrunch 的官方聲明為：「部份實驗室讓處理器維持高負載狀態，直到電力耗盡。這不符合真實生活的情境……我們的測試數據以及顧客資料（註：監測已售出的蘋果手機）顯示，採用所有不同零件 iPhone 6s 和 6s Plus 的真實電池壽命差異，差異僅在 2-3% 之間。」

但 Techcrunch 指出，蘋果以所有消費者的平均使用情境來看省電效能並不盡合理。因為不間斷的打手機遊戲、看影片，可能正是某些科技重度使用者的「一般情境」，而那群人正是最在乎電池續航力的一群。

為什麼台積電製程在高負載狀態，能較對手大幅省電？

一名不願具名的電機系教授表示，台積電針對最新的 16 奈米 FinFET 製程，曾發表 16 篇技術論文；但從中看不出能大幅省電的端倪。但這不令人意外，台積電實際量產製程的性能，原本就常較公開資料要佳，「他本來就會留一手。」

他依學理分析，過去業界的努力方向，是致力於減少待機時的電力流失。但這回看來，台積電全新製程的強項是在高負載，能以更少的耗電量讓電晶體運作，「這就非常厲害」。

然而，不少人質疑，三星是 14 奈米製程，較台積電的 16 奈米製程為小。理論上，不是半導體製程更微小更省電嗎？

其實，這牽扯到台積電、三星兩強之爭，一段暗潮洶湧的角力過程。

一名台積電前高階主管，曾向《天下雜誌》透露，台積電用於蘋果的 16 奈米 FinFET 製程，原本打算稱為 20 奈米 FinFET。因為該製程的電晶體最小線寬（half-pitch）與量產的前一代 20 奈米 CMOS 製程差不多，只是換上革命性的超省電 FinFET 電晶體。

但客戶反應，你這個製程跟三星幾乎一樣，但三星叫 14 奈米，你叫 20 奈米。拿到市場賣，採用台積電製程的產品，很容易被認為落後三星一個世代而吃悶虧。

台積電從善如流，不久後改名，但只敢叫 16 奈米。「我們至少有點良心，不敢（像三星）那樣隨便叫，」這位台積電前高層苦笑說。

回顧半導體製程歷史，過去的技術世代都謹守摩爾定律──一年半到兩年之間，電晶體最小尺度的線寬縮小 0.7 倍（面積縮小 0.49 倍，差不多是二分之一）。由國際組織──國際半導體技術藍圖聯盟（ITRS）統籌，帶領業界齊步走。

台積電過去也行禮如儀，90 奈米、65 奈米、45 奈米的依續下去。

但在到了理應 2010 年上路的 32 奈米。當時剛回鍋擔任執行長的張忠謀突出奇招，跳過 32 奈米，推出電晶體面積小了 20% 的 28 奈米技術世代，效能、成本遠勝對手的 32 奈米產品。

三星、IBM、格羅方德陣營措手不及而步調大亂，28 奈米因此成為台積電史上最賺錢、稱霸時間最長的一個世代。

這是向來以深思、戰略著稱的張忠謀，較不讓一般人熟悉的戰術面。

有此先例，這回三星「跳過」20 奈米，直攻 14 奈米 FinFET，也只能算是「以彼之道，還施彼身」的一次成功反擊。

然而，2016 年的 A10 未來一役，三星卻可能全盤皆輸。

張忠謀 4 年前宣布台積電要跨入封裝領域，當時震驚業界。但現在證明成果豐碩，台積電最先進的整合扇出型（InFO）晶圓級封裝，可望首度應用在 A10 處理器。

花旗證券分析師 Roland Shu 在最新一篇報告表示，InFO 業務應該短期內很難賺錢，但卻可以讓台積電建立與對手三星的差異化。如果明年推出的蘋果 iPhone 7 的 A10 處理器採用 InFO 技術，基於 InFO 技術為台積電獨家擁有，「台積電極有可能拿下壓倒性比例的 A10 訂單」。

一名與台積電關係密切的相關業者也指出，台積電已確定靠著 InFO 技術，擊敗三星，拿下全部 A10 訂單。去年，台積電以 8,500 萬美元向高通買下的龍潭廠，即規劃為 InFO 專用廠。目前已快馬加鞭的裝機、測試，預計明年第 2 季將開始量產，迎接 A10 訂單。

Selling volume shrinking, but not over yet. Support at 0.20 is strong enough to hold.
