英国《卫报》报导指出，最近在南非、澳洲和加拿大，都发现新版的Omicron病株，学者暂时称之为BA.2，跟目前已知的BA.1区隔。

伦敦大学学院基因研究所所长巴卢（Francois Balloux）表示，这两种变异病株表现不同，「Omicron有两种谱系，BA.1和BA.2有基因上的差异。」

BA.2与标准Omicron（BA.1）病株有许多相同的基因突变，但BA.2少了一种容易被PCR快速检测出来的基因特性，所以学者又把这种新发现的病株形容为「隐形Omicron」（stealth Omicron）。

学者说，经由基因定序仍可辨认出感染「隐形Omicron」，但光用快筛可能不容易察觉。

目前资料有限，暂时不清楚「隐形Omicron」传播能力，也不清楚世界各国中是否已有更多相关案例。

她告诉天空新闻说：「我们现在看到它在世界上许多国家传播，尤其是在欧洲，至少有21国传出确诊病例。我们也看到社区传播，在包含英国在内的几个国家快速蔓延。目前我们无法断定Omicron病毒株比Delta病毒株更温和，我们很多人都希望如此，但目前没有证据。」

史摩伍德也重申，世卫组织不认为旅行禁令能阻止Omicron传播。「世卫组织的立场是，旅行禁令无法阻止Omicron传播。全球不到一周就有50多国通报Omicron病例，就是最清楚的说明。」

世卫强调：「就算（Omicron）的严重性相当于、甚至低于变异株Delta，若感染力强出现更多患者染疫，住院治疗的病患也将增加，而且确诊与死亡病例的增加，期间将有一段时间差。」

有关于再度感染的风险，世卫表示：「初步分析显示Omicron呈现的变异可能降低抗体的中和活性，导致自然免疫的保护降低。」
