86 firemen from 10 stations, mobilised to quell raging fire at rubber factory
New Straits Times NABILAH HAMUDIN New Straits TimesNovember 24, 2016 TAIPING: The store room of rubber factory was almost razed down to the ground in a fire at Jalan Perusahaan 3, Kamunting, here last night.
Perak Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the department was notified of the fire at 7.29pm.
“However, upon arrival, the fire has already destroyed 50 per cent of the store room.
“We also discovered liquid ammonia spilled on the floor of the store room. However the area has been certified safe and no injuries were reported,” he said, adding that the department managed to control the fire at 2.40am.
The spokesman said about 86 firemen from Kamunting, Taiping, Bagan Serai, Batu Kurau, Tanjung Piandang, Juru, Alor Pongsu, Kuala Kurau, Kuala Sepetang and Nibong Tebal fire stations were dispatched to the scene.
He added that the store room had been used to keep ceramic and boxes for the gloves.
In making specific reference to the Malaysian Rubber Glove Manufacturer Association’s (Margma) call for an exemption from having to convert 75% of its export earnings to ringgit, he said BNM has already provided exporters to hold higher balances (with the central bank’s approval) to meet their obligations in foreign currency.
“Thus the request by Margma to reduce the conversion of foreign currency proceeds into ringgit from 75% to 50% is already addressed by BNM including the double conversion concern,” said Abdul Rahman in a statement yesterday.
