AirAsia's shareholders may see special dividend in 4Q when AAC stake sale concludes

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 30): AirAsia Group Bhd shareholders can look forward to receiving a special dividend in the fourth quarter of 2018 as the disposal of its aircraft leasing business, Asia Aviation Capital Ltd (AAC), is expected to conclude then.

"We have received US$501 million for the aircraft leasing deal under AAC... We will announce a special dividend when the transaction on AAC concludes in 4Q 2018," its group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said in a statement to announce the airline's financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2018 today.

In March, AirAsia had announced a deal to sell its AAC to aircraft investor BBAM for US$1.18 billion. CIMB Investment Bank Bhd had estimated then that after taking into account AirAsia's debt prepayment and costs, a special dividend per share of 75 sen may be paid by the airline.

Fernandes also noted the airline has concluded the remaining 25% sale of AAE Travel Ptd Ltd (Expedia) for US$60 million on Aug 14. The total gain on sale for the 50% stake in Expedia was US$131 million.

"This is yet another example of us creating valuable assets and monetising them at more than 10 times of our initial capital invested.

"We continue to create valuable assets and monetise our investments in our non-core businesses as and when a good offer is placed before us,” he added.

Those who sold today, will be regret in next coming days or weeks. Too many people over sensitive to oil price fluctuation.

1st of all, spike of oil price is purely speculation on Iran restriction on oil + temporary weekly fluctuation on oil inventories in US. We all already knew, China government stated it will eliminate oil buy in US, move to buy more in Iran & Russia. If this the case, US oil supply inventories will be a big increase in coming weeks, then oil price will drop further.

2nd to reconsider, if US-CHINA trade war really happen cause by arrogant Trump, eventually oil price will plummet worse to below $60 due to fear of trade drop. But a person has to rethink properly, if trade war really happen, does it cause any effect to airline traveller to stop travel especially on holiday season in 4Q18? Beside market sentiment fear which I believe is overblown trigger by market speculators, does it affect company core earning business in airline industry? Will traveller cancel or stop their travel holiday immediately because of trade war?

3rd thing to remind, Airasia already announced going to pay dividend 75sen by Q418, probably by end Oct. Some more Airasia worst case condition on past 2Q18 was the worst Quarter with jet fuel price $89, still can earn EPS 10.8sen return. That impressive Qtr result, show a good Airasia mgmt. in cost operation control even through oil price was high of $89.

Don't follow blindly or over sensitive toward market noise, you will lose if trade buy-sell so frequent. Those who understand what stock to buy, how much to buy, when to buy & when to sell at appropriate time & big macro event will win big in long run vs daily speculators.

Airasia didnt say 75sen la. Only research houses expecting them to pay that amount. Which means full proceeds from their sale. But i doubt it is going to happen.

I agree that US China trade war will affect the oil price in the long run. But it wont happen this year.

At this point the main concern is trade war and EM. Please trade carefully. Set ur own target, when to buy in or when to cut loss.

At the end its up to each investors preference. There is no right or wrong.

Airpoints: Dont get me wrong, TF did say that they will announce Special Dividend in Q4. But i dont think the quantum will be 75sen. It will be lower. This 75sen is mentioned only by research houses. But if u read carefully its just their assumption that if they pay out all the proceeds then it will translate to 75 sen.

The reason why i dont think AA is going to pay out all is becoz:

- Higher fuel prices. Affecting their profit. They need to reserve some cash for working capital.
- Capex for short term is also needed for their Philippines AA since IPO has been postponed till next year.
- They also need cash to expand their red cargo and red logistics which will be their main focus of the group in years to come.

Alot of ppl here buying is solely becoz of the special dividend. Which is mere speculation.

If u ask me, i do think this company's fundamental is good. But only when the oil prices stablised and fear of EM and trade war subsides then only fundamental will kick in.

But it wont be my choice of stock now as generally, airlines stocks across the globe is trading in the same pattern.

Please trade carefully. Generally Sept is a hard month to trade. This round its even harder with the external noises.

U may wanna lock in ur position if it reaches ur target, but bear in mind it might also go lower. So whatever ur target is u must be confident with it. I am strongly against jumping in for short term gain.

Just for ur info. Alot of stocks are trading at discount now such as GenM, Genting. So choose wisely.

My advise is dont chase stocks. So long as u have the money on hand there is always another chance.
